Blue Scrumpy left this review about Hop & Scotch

After what seemed like an ultra-long bus journey from Cotteridge on a bus packed with local schoolchildren, I arrived into Kings Heath, desperate for a pee! Luckily Hop & Scotch opened spot on its 4pm weekday opening time and I ended up in the toilet before paying for my beer!

This is a friendly micropub set in a parade of shops. The staff are extremely knowledgeable about the local beer scene. When another customer walked in and enquired about their range of bottled and canned IPAs to take away, they were quick to discuss the various options.

4 real ales were available - Brew York Calmer Chameleon, Green Duck Bostin' Bitter, Thornbridge Jaipur & Kinver Black Ram. The cider was Hogan's Wild Elder and their Lonely Partridge Perry was also on. Craft beers were Twisted Barrel/Dead Weight Cute Story, Salopian Auric, Yonder Pink Lemonade, Boon 2-year-old Lambic, Infinity Momentum & Big Smoke Cold Smark. All of this was in addition to the extensive beer selection in the fridges.

I hadn't been drinking in Kings Heath for just over 8 years, but I've been wanting to pay a visit to Hop & Scotch for a few years. Research revealed that the area appears to be quite up and coming, especially for craft beers. So, this ended up being my first of 6 pubs in the area. In addition, it appears that the Hop & Scotch owners have opened up a new bar two or three doors along the street called Houblon, featuring Belgian, German and other European beers, along with ciders and perries. Being closed on a Wednesday, I couldn't visit it this time around. So, there is a good chance that I will be back in the area within the next few years.

Very good little micro just off the main road. Very friendly barman. We had a good chat about local beers and breweries. 3 ales on and an array of craft taps. The beers we had were on top form and I will call again.

Real Ale Ray left this review about Hop & Scotch

I met the friendly and informative owner on my Sunday afternoon visit, who told us that this shop unit was previously a stationery shop. There were three very well kept hand pulled ales on the bar, plus a choice of craft beer, lagers and ciders served from ten keg taps along the wall behind the bar. There was also some shelving on the right hand side of the bar, with an extensive range of bottled and canned beers, plus some further options served from coolers behind the bar. The beer board was in the form of brown paper sheets attached to the wall, on the left hand side of the bar. This was quite novel and a first for me. The bar area consisted of a rustic stained pine counter top and a dark blue painted bar front. Seating was a mix of high and low tables and chairs, I went for the Fixed Wheel Pale and the Blue Monkey Infinity. Check opening times as Whatpub for Sunday opening times stated 12pm, when they in fact open at 2pm.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about Hop & Scotch

I was expecting a quiet bottle shop with a few customers sampling the craft keg taps (although there are ten, so not disappointed there), but the place was absolutely heaving with a Good Chemistry tap takeover when I happened by. Managing to get to the bar, I found three handpumps as well, so went for the visiting Norrington's X mild (£3.40).

Independent bar and bottle shop a short walk up a side street from the main bus route in Kings Heath. 10 rotating keg lines and 3 cask beers on offer, plus bottles and cans. There is also a select range of whisky and gin. Single room with a variety of seating. Enjoyed beers from Wilde Childe, Green Duck and Burning Soul breweries last Saturday, and Kinver, Rat, Burning Soul and a Cloudwater sour beer today. Draft beers served in 1/3 2/3 1/2 pint and pint measures and tasters available. Well worth a visit.
