Tried to call in again a couple of weeks ago. Still firmly closed at 16:45 on a Saturday despite claiming to open at 16:00.

On three levels of Sunbridge Wells, it looks "Olde Worde", but is in fact almost brand new. Much of the walls are bare brick, but it works well. 6 handpumps on the bar with 4 serving ale and 2 cider during my visit. Friendly guys behind the bar and my pint was just £2.50. Quite impressed with this one.

October 2019 update
Yes I was right, so much better than before and Nomandic's Gaffa Katie was in checking up when I dropped in so all was right. Probably the best bar in Sunbridge Wells or for a few streets.

Nomadic Brewery of Leeds takes over this place on 16th August 2019, that should be a massive improvement.

Visited yesterday (Friday) afternoon around 1:30pm to find the Rose & Crown closed. The opening hours on WhatPub suggest it opens at midday on a Friday so I was actually beginning to wonder if there was another entrance I should have been using. Neither the Sunbridgewells web site nor the Rose & Crown's Facebook page list the opening hours, which I find rather frustrating. Businesses should really put a bit of effort in to letting customers know when they are open, especially in a complex such as this where your business hours are inconsistent with those of your neighbours. Anyway I scuttled off and did a few places on North Parade and came back later at about 2:50pm on the off chance and was pleased to find the place open. I enquired about opening hours and the barmaid said it can vary in the week but usually about 4pm. The venue's casual attitude towards opening hours doesn't seem to do it any favours, as I was the only customer in, though another couple did join later.

Anyway, enough of my rant about opening times. The Rose & Crown is apparently split over three floors, though I only explored what I would call the ground floor where the bar is. The entrance is off Upper Millergate and there is a short climb up a metal staircase to get to the pub entrance, past the historic pub sign.

At the bar there were six hand pumps but only three on. King Neptune by Bosun's, John Smiths (yes really) and an IPA by Saltaire(?). The King Neptune was a bargain at £1.10 for a half because there was a 20% discount applied until 8pm.

There is a lot of church pew type seating which is not comfortable. I moved to another table so I could get a chair, which was much better.

This is an interesting place but having only two real choices on the real ale front was a bit of a disappointment. Worth a visit, even if it's only the once.

Yet another bar in the Sunbridge Wells complex, this one is pretty much in the middle of the building and is run by Lees. Decor is in the "old pub" style and there are a couple of Lees' beers on hand pump, although I wasn't bowled over by the quality. Look out for the very old pub sign, reputedly an 18 or 19th century original, there is also a very large model locomotive half way up the staircase.
