As well described in previous reviews, although any description will struggle to capture the place. Suffice it to say it has an excellent selection of both beers and 'artisan' food. I could do without the rather loud and slightly random indie music though.

Visited this 2019 Good Beer Guide bar last month and agree very much with the previous review. Th bottle shop is impressive with massive can and bottle selection, and the ground floor is very much a cafe/var feel to it. We went up a few steps on the ground floor for the table seating there, but I had to go up another floor to get the beers we wanted and bring it downstairs, and we were directed to toilets 2 floors up and found later that there was one down in the bottle shop. Good selection of cask and craft beers and we chose Pomona Island Session IPA Mosaic and Citra.

Multi-roomed sister pub to the original on Stonegate converted from a saddlery. The ground floor is very café bar in style with big girly friendly windows. There are a few seats and a sofa up a couple of steps to the rear. Upstairs there are two more public rooms and a bar which wasn't open on our Monday lunchtime visit. Above that is the kitchen, toilets and 2 function rooms. Downstairs is a craft beer shop where beer can be bought to take out or drink in for a small charge. The upstairs rooms are decorated with all sorts of bric-a-brac. The food menu is based on Yorkshire tapas, we didn't try any of those, but we shared an excellent charcuterie board which was great value. Three handpumps and several keg taps on the bar and both my pints were in excellent nick. We'll be back here both for the beer and the charcuterie.

Stonegate's big brother. This feels more like a Georgian drinking house than the Harry Potter-esque micro feel of the original.
OB has described it well below and I'd only add that the wide glass frontage makes the bar feel very airy and allows you to see how busy things are before committing. Very on our Friday evening visit.
Despite the numbers, service at the bar was swift, efficient and friendly and the atmosphere very genial throughout the place.
Our visit was on the second day of a Northern Monk tap takeover so all 11 keg pumps were taken up by Northern Monk over an astonishing array of strengths and styles of which none tried disappointed. The three cask offers were: Northern Monk Porter, Titanic Plum Porter and Cloudwater ESB (excellent).
Another must visit in York.

Now relocated to its new site in Lendal the mix is basically the same as before with a basement bottle shop and now bars on two floors. Instead of the long climb to a small half timbered hall with animal head decor there is now a lot of space, albeit still rammed on a Friday evening when I dropped by. The decor is altogether more classy being a mix of neo-classical and renaissance with columns and art work rather than the mediaeval splendour (squalor?) of the old place. The sign outside states "Craft Beer Mansion" giving a slight air of pretension. There is a double room on the main floor, the front section having the bar counter, 11 keg taps with rather nice wooden handles and three pulls on the counter end without clips, the beers are listed on boards, some will be pleased to note there was no cask under 5%. Crafties favourite breweries were well represented. Upstairs is another bar with a similar decor, counter and the same range of beers, including the cask choice, there is a small room to the side as well. Different to the original but in many ways the same and still one not to miss in York.
