A tucked away back street boozer in a neighbourhood that is otherwise quite residential, this is inevitable something of a local’s pub, but once we had negotiated the gaggle of smoker’s in the doorway it seemed friendly enough.

The small entrance vestibule has two rooms leading off, one labelled as the Pool Room and the other the Public Bar. We opted for the latter and found quite a traditional, and perhaps somewhat dated room with some type of black lino on the floor, rough white plasterwork on the ceiling along with a wooden beam or two, Seating was a mixture of padded red banquettes along the wall, regular chairs and a few bar stools. A chalkboard at the rea appeared to show skittles scores, although we didn’t spot the alley, and next to this was a cabinet with a good collection of trophies. A projector screen was rolled up out of sight, so presumably major sporting fixtures are shown. A juke box and a fruit machine completed the entertainment lineup, whilst there were a few black and white pencil drawings on the walls. A horribly fake electric fire was off to one side, along with a few festive decorations on the mantlepiece above.

The solitary real ale on tap was the local Twisted Oak’s Code Red, whilst a second pump appeared unused. Ciders meanwhile were a duo from Thatcher’s with their Gold and Dry. Overall, nothing really wrong with this pub, but not really worth making a special effort to track it down either.

Backstreet to the extent you think Google is having you on. Two rooms, a main bar to right which is a basic but comfy affair with office carpet, green fabric banquettes, black and white 60s trim (I didn’t rouse myself to go to other room but it looked empty). Two pumps with one cask on, a surprisingly good Severn Best Bitter (NBSS 3.5). Clientele almost exclusively middle-aged lads playing poker with silent sports TV for company otherwise. The fact it stocked an interesting cask in good nick means it’s worth a look if you’re near this part of town – a fair backstreet boozer and better cask than good number of the GBG’23 listed pubs (which this one isn’t). 6.5
