Blue Scrumpy left this review about The Fox's Den

The Foxes Den is a small bar which is a stone's throw away across the river from the Northumberland Arms in West Thirston.

Our visit to Northumberland had revolved around this pub and one other, as opening times here are very restrictive (currently open from 6pm for 4 days each week).

We waited outside and a minute or so after 6pm, a lady appeared on foot and duly opened the doors. Steps lead down to a cellar bar underneath what is a bakery and café during the day (toilets are upstairs from the entrance). Mind your head as you descend!

The cellar bar was heated by a small gas heater. But it was kicking out enough heat to make it fairly cosy. A couple of regular locals had beaten us to the door. But pillars separate the small room and make it a relaxed drinking environment.

Both the barmaid and the locals were friendly. The same two Rigg & Furrow beers that had been on in the Northumberland Arms were also on here - Trickster & Run Hop Run. I'd not enjoyed the Trickster. But the Run Hop Run was a lovely citrusy beer, possibly better than some of the darker beers I'd had earlier in the day, which I'd normally prefer.

This was well worth the extra planning involved to ensure we found it open. Whilst they no longer offer a real cider, this was my favourite pub of this visit to Northumberland.
