Blue Scrumpy left this review about Cask Coach House

I think the last time I was in here, the venue was still known as the Hard Times & Misery. Now called the Cask Coach House and run by the award-winning team from the Cask micropub on Queen's Drive, this place has limited opening hours, but is still very similar to how it used to be.

There is a very small bar area downstairs and a larger seating area plus toilets upstairs. The young barman was fairly chatty and knowledgeable. A couple of old blokes sat at the bar were trying to tell us about local Liverpool pubs given we said we had come from London for the day. We gave them the time of day, but we'd clearly been drinking in many more Liverpool pubs than they had!

Just 3 real ales were on - Wily Fox Karma Citra & Third Star & Oscar's Top Dog. However, with so many changes in names and ownership, I can't help but feel that this place has lost its way a little. With its limited opening hours (not open until 3pm) and its slightly out of the way location, it is not particularly easy to fit it into any itinerary of Liverpool pubs. Nevertheless, if I am this way again late on an afternoon or during the evening, I will try to stop by.

Has been taken over by the people who run Cask on Queens Drive. Still tiny and there were 4 cask ales on.

Old Boots left this review about The Coach House

Small trendy bar with seating outside and upstairs, the ground floor counter has three hand pumps two in use with Bens Brewery beers, one unused plus a few crafty keg taps.

Rebranded and much more obvious from the street than last time I was here, though inside is basically the same (don’t remember the big TV upstairs though). The music selection is great, numerous hand pulls, service good, but… I don’t know. I have been here several times during its various guises and never seen another paying customer. Plenty in at the shisha bar next door though.

Al Bundy left this review about Dickens & King

UPDATE UPDATE: Now reopened as The Coach House. Ran by the same people who run The Angus on Dale St. Still tiny but now with outside street tables so you can now probably get more outside than in. The bar has been moved back to its original position at the rear and not to the side. 4 cask ales with a few fizz taps also. Froze my bollocks off outside but the weather hey. Worth a visit

27/7/19:
UPDATE: Now called Dickens And King. Name change only.

5/4/19:
Now open. Rearranged inside with the bar now along the right hand wall. 3 handpulls now on the bar with an additional 3 gravity beers due to be added. Still tiny and now much slimmer and, quite possibly, less room than before. Upstairs part unchanged.

Real Ale Ray left this review about Hard Times & Misery

The easiest way to find this micro is to look for the café next door, once you enter Maryland St. This micro was opened in 2016 and has been used as various outlets down the years. Originally it was a violin repair shop, tanning shop and a hairdressers. The interior consists of a small ground floor bar and first floor seating along with one toilet. The ground floor room had bare red brick walls and parquet floor. A small bar area is found along the back wall, with a small pine counter. The back bar had dark blue painted walls, with some pine shelving displaying various types of Gin. Four ales on stillage along the back wall, served from pins, to increase the turn over and beer choice. Beer choices on my visit were, Rock the Boat Dragons Teeth, Rock the Boat Fab Four IPA, Neptune Mosiac Pale Ale. I went for the Neptune, priced at £3.60 a pint.

not much to add to the other reviews except it is as good as they say. I was the only one in so I just retired to the cosy upstairs room and relaxed to the trendy indie music playing. well worth a visit, just don't take half an hour trying to find it like me. Google maps may help.

ROB Camra left this review about Hard Times & Misery

As Al says this is a tiny place and quite difficult to find. There's no external signage as far as I could see and the A board wasn't outside. Luckily we had the address written down. Downstairs is mainly standing although there are about 4 stools. Upstairs there's a couple of tables with chairs. The beer is dispensed from Pins set on a stillage behind the bar. Not a great selection on our Sunday visit. Two stouts and a brown bitter (Neptune Riptide). This meant that Ms CAMRA had a tonic water. My pint was in good nick though and the barman assured me that his selection is usually better than that. With it being so small you more or less have to talk to other people. I quite liked this place and we'll no doubt be calling again soon. There was a bloke called Al Bundy in the bar during our visit! :-))

A tiny micropub situated in a back street off the Hardman St drag. There is a small upstairs to sit also. Real ale available but its dispensed by gravity from the barrels which are situated behind the bar, having been moved from the left of the bar so there are no handpumps on the bar. A wide selection of gins are available if you like that sort of stuff. The decor is whitewashed brick and though there is an upstairs part this place is very easy to miss. Hopefully this place will do well as the lady behind the bar was very enthusiastic and knowledgeable about real ale.
