A nice Georgian frontage, with bow windows. The building was a former gun-shop (even when I worked in Stafford 15 years ago) and was the town's first Labour Exchange in 1909. This micropub has changed a lot since it opened, it originally sold real ales, then ditched them, but now it does again; the craft beers have always been there - the bottled beer has gone now in favour of gin and, increasingly it seems, rum. There is a front room and two smaller ones behind, in wood and green. There is some interesting ephemera and pictures. Service is friendly and there was just a single customer in at my visit - usually it is more busy. No TV, music at a decent level. Beer was Holden's Golden Glow, which was fine and crafty stuff. Needs a little more on the real ale front, but still worth a visit.

Strangely there is nothing externally apart from the address to indicate that this is the micropub as the name of the old gun maker is still on the outside. Inside it is a rectangular room with the bar at the back and a further room to the left and rear of the bar. There is a selection of bottles on some shelves to the right. I noticed around five keg taps at the rear of the bar but they were all advertised as stupid halves or two third pints. There is also a fair range of non-mainstream spirits, mostly gins I assume.
The bar has just three hand pumps which had Slater's Premium, Twisted Urban Legend and a fading Cross Bay Zenith. I went for the Slater's Premium which was £3.40 which struck me as expensive for a bog standard beer from a local micro. It was in good condition.
I have to say I preferred the Floodgate to this one.

Not bad an with more room round the back. Reasonable selection of ales but nothing that strong. Would return if back in the town.

Sister micropub to the Floodgate and only been open for several weeks. This former Gunmakers shop is rather Dickensian in shape and style and with the various gin drinking customers on our visit, which transported us back in time.
Beer wise they had two handpumps and a large selection of bottled beers, which can be purchased and drank on the premises. We sat in the rear part of pub as the front room seating was full. This was a bonus as I checked out the buildings ownership, which was displayed on a chimney breast. The building was first established as a bookmakers in 1662 and listings proceed up to present day as the bottle and gin shop. We went for the Grey Tees brewery Caradogs on handpump, which was excellent.
