Old Boots left this review about The Ale House

A micro consisting of two corridor like areas, seating in the left side, counter in the right hand side as you enter. Five handpumps, on this occasion all the beers were from Pentrich as there was some sort of tap takeover, a small pump clip collection shows lots of well known northern names. Keg cider and a Pilsner were also available. Decor from John Ireland’s “The Gentle Art of Making Guinness” posters from a dismembered 1981 calendar as well as the aforementioned clips and some European beer ad’s. It has a very woody (from pallets) interior with more seating and the gents upstairs.

Will Larter left this review about The Ale House

Occupying a double shop unit on the market square, the rather unimaginatively named Ale House is nevertheless an attractive building with an initial impression, once inside, of exposed stone and fairly rough timber cladding. The bar counter is to the right on entering, with five hand pumps, four of which had beers from Vocation brewery, the other being from Lincoln Green. The owner, apparently a taciturn man, swerved my attempts to make conversation. After asking for a half of the Lincoln Green Tuck, I tried him with "Are you all right?", then "This is my first time in Clitheroe", either of which could have provided some sort of opening, but his only response was "£1.70 please. Thank you very much." So I gave up and retired to the table near the door. The second room to the left has bottles and cans, and there are keg beers on the bar. Upstairs are the toilets and some additional seating. While I was there another man came in who turned out to be a regular, and he managed to get the owner to speak to him, so maybe it's just strangers he doesn't like.

It's stated on their own site, along with What Pub that this is a micropub. Ok it might have started out as a micro, but I feel that they have changed their policies slightly here, what with four keg beers, piped music, three drinking areas and serving hot food, so in my opinion it is a small bar.
Whatever it is, we really enjoyed our visit and I thought they had a good selection of four cask ales on handpump. The pub was nicely kitted out with lots of reclaimed timber and some interesting pictures dotted around the place. I especially liked the collection of pictures the "Art of Making Guinness" which depicts 12 monthly processes in the art of producing a good pint of Guinness.
Back to the beer, four ales on our visit, which were Beer Monkey Blonde Rogue, Tyrrill Brewery Windermere IPA, Elland 1872 Porter and Deeply Vale Brewery All American. I went for the Windermere IPA and the Blonde Rogue, both were in great shape and only £2.80 a pint, the porter at 6.5% was priced at £3.80 a pint. I found this pub to have a good atmosphere and would return for the beer quality, selection and prices.

Visited on a weekday early afternoon earlier in the month. There are 5 or 6 hand pulls serving, at the time of my visit, two by Beer Monkey, one by Blackedge and Madog by Purple Moose. I had the Black Stout by Blackedge, which I have had before and found to be very enjoyable, and indeed was on top form at the Ale House. £1.60 for a half pint. Keg options were Berliner Pilsner, Squawk Milvus IPA, Beavertown Neck Oil and Thatchers Old Rascal cider. The keg taps are slightly hidden but pump clips (or whatever the keg equivalents are) are stuck to the bar so you can see what is available. There is also a big chalk board in the room off to the left listing all the cask and keg options. Gents are upstairs, where there is a further seating area which I assume is used as an overflow when downstairs gets busy. Definitely worth a look.

A very good pub. Though its not a 'micropub' it does have the feel of a micro. There are 2 areas as you enter, left and right, plus an upstairs bit that I never ventured to. The place is very wooden. There were 5 handpumps on the bar dispensing Deeply Vale, Brothers, Doghouse, and a couple of others I've forgotten. Its a very good place to visit.

Situated in a prime position and in a former estate agents this independent micro pub opened it's doors earlier this year after a £15,000 refurb. The bar has 2 entrances one serving each of the two rooms, and upstairs there is a room with further seating (but no bar)
There was mish mash of dark wooded furniture styles that seemed to blend in nicely and did not seem out of place. There was also a few miscellaneous items strewn about plus an "On the pumps blackboard" announcing future guest beers. There were 5 handpumps on the bar (4 in operation)all reasonably priced at £2.80p a pint,of which I tried a pint of stout plus one from Blackburn's Three B's Brewery.
Beyond the bar area a little work seems to be going on and a notice displayes says "Kitchen coming soon serving pie and mash"
