Blue Scrumpy left this review about Fossgate Tap

Corner bar with a fairly impressive solection of cask ales and craft beers. Entering from Fossgate, there are a couple of steps up to the bar area. I did see some stairs heading up to at least one other level, but similar to Graham below, did not explore, as there was sufficient seating on the ground level.

Cask ales on were Cameron's Road Crew, Strongarm & Lion's Pride, Brass Castle Bad Kitty, Tooth and Claw Barley-Quin & Brew York Fennec Blonde. Craft beers were Northern Monk Faith, Holy Faith, Patron's Project Amy Hastings/The Magician/Pastore/Cherry Sour & Patron's Project 7 Deadly Sins/Adrian Baxter/Pinta Wrath/Chocolate Chilli Stout (why they have such complicated names is beyond me!), Brew York Juice Forsyth, Tooth and Claw Cat Amongst, Vault City Tasty Rainbow Orange & Yeastie Boys Bigmouth.

More crafty than the Blue Bell and the Hop, but still an interesting place for a beer.

A large trendy sort of place, claiming to be over 3 floors, although we didn't explore to find out. The main bar is in the central room, with entrances via seating/eating areas either side. It's a bit heavy on recycled wood, but nice enough. Cask ales seem to usually include Cameron's Strongarm and a couple from Brew York, with guests on this visit being Brass Castle Bad Kitty, Cameron's Road Crew and Rudgate Simply the Zest. Some crafty things available also. I can't say it compares with the adjacent Blue Bell and Hop but it is fair enough for a pint.

Real Ale Ray left this review about Fossgate Tap

I seemed to have overlooked this pub each time visiting York, maybe as it's so close to the Bluebell. Anyway made it through the doors on this visit and found they had four ales on handpump. These were Brass Castle Bad Kitty, Turning Point Drones in the City, Rudgate Ruby Mild and Rudgate Dinga Dinga. Various seating to be found here, some small tables and chairs outside, a largish lounge area, seating opposite the bar and a small front area near the corner entrance.

Oggwyn Great left this review about The Fossgate Tap

Long narrow bar on several levels , lots of craft beer taps and six handpulls , four on during our visit with three from Turning Point and Mcolls Suma which was in good nick , barman was friendly , fairly quiet on a Thursday night with just a few drinking in the entrance and half a dozen eating on the lower level.

This bar used to be popular as Sutlers, and is now Fossgate Tap and will still be popular with it's good range of both cask and craft beers. We enjoyed our Turning Point Milk Foley last month.

We found ourselves taking refuge here for a swift early evening beer as everywhere else in York ahead of Christmas seemed to be full. At least we found a seat.
As others have mentioned, this as much an eating as a drinking spot and plenty were eating. It's all fairly formulaic with lots of scrubbed pine, blue and white paint and a standard menu. You wouldn't necessarily choose it as the ideal venue for a pint.
Beers on were: Roosters California Common, Sonnet Athenaeum 43, Atom Dark Matter, Atom Quantum State, Bad Seed Kiwi and Bad Co. Love over Gold. I forget what I went for but it wasn't the freshest being slightly cloudy and flat. There are also 16 keg beers available which included breweries such as Tiny Rebel, Lagunitas and Meantime so perhaps these are the lower risk option here.
A useful spot for a beer when York is very busy but it's unlikely to make it to the top of my visiting list ordinarily.

Will Larter left this review about Sutlers Bar

This pub occupies several shop units at the top of Fossgate, with the entrance though a small seating area on the corner of Pavement which would make a nice snug if it weren't for people traipsing through from time to time. The bar is badly organised, with the six hand pumps partially obscured by a pile of table reserved notices. There were plenty of staff, but most of them were taking food orders and then spending ages inputting them into the computer - very inefficient; this left just one person serving drinks and to be fair he was doing his best. My half of Bad Co Whiter Shade of Pale was not very good (see photos for other beers on at the time of my visit); not only insipid but lifeless too. As well as half a dozen hand pumps there were numerous keg offerings, but this is clearly not what most customers were here for: on a Saturday afternoon this is very much a place where people come to eat.

Really liked this bar. Great selection on the bar when we were there yesterday. Fallen Grapevine, Fullers Summer Ale, Saltaire Elderflower Blonde, Black Iris Endless Summer and Atom Pale Ale. Upstairs quite quirky with separate rooms going off the long corridor. It was popular and the beers we had were good. Lots of variety for those who like the keg beers, and they also do cocktails if that is what your choice is. Will be back.

ROB Camra left this review about Sutlers Bar

As others have mentioned, this is a long thin room with a few extra tables in an L shaped area to the rear. After all the hype surrounding the opening of this place, I have to say I was expecting more. Shabby chic tables & chairs give it a "not quite finished" look. 6 handpumps on the bar, 5 on during my visit. All but one were safe nationals except for a Little Brew beer. I had a half of it, which was just about OK. I'll call in again to see how it's settled in, but my initial impression is that it's not particularly good.

Alan Winfield left this review about Sutlers Bar

Sutlers Bar is a new addition to the York pub scene.
Once inside there is a long narrow room which runs the width of the pub, this room is roughly divided into three areas, the bar is in the middle area, the seating hers is small stools, the right side has normal tables and chairs, the left side is larger and down a few steps.
There was a good choice of real ales on the bar,i had a drink of Lees MPA which went down very well, the other beers i noted were Ainsty Wankled Waggon,Robinsons Dizzy Blonde and Hop Studio India, there was also a selection of craft keg beers.
The pub was very busy on my Saturday afternoon visit.
I quite liked this place.
