This was a late Georgian church which opened as Fraud cocktail bar in 1988. I attempted to come here with a mate around Spring 1996 as it was about the only place around with a late licence, but we found it too expensive.
As I’ve plodded up and down Walton Street a fair few times in recent years, I though I’d give the place a try and despite the presence of [communion?] wine, cocktails and only bottled beers, I found it to be quite attractive and certainly something different from the largely traditional pubs in Oxford; it’s certainly striking compared to other cocktail-type bars in the city. The interior is understandably cavernous, with stained glass upper windows. The floor is wood with some black and white chequered tiles. The walls are largely distressed and there’s a coffered ceiling, the whole being rather Italianate. What’s not so Classical is the huge suspended gantry running around much of the ceiling’s perimeter, used no doubt to service the theatre-style lighting and mirror ball; likewise, the huge stacked speaker arrays which hint at very loud music which does occur here when colleges hold their balls; there's also a grand piano, so perhaps live music comes here. The bar is modern with a copper top and décor amounts to little more than large, potted palms. Furniture is typical continental style, whilst lighting comes from suspended fairy lights, then filament bulbs on incredibly long flexes. Customers were few in number but were probably locals.
I plumped for a bottle of Pilsner Urquell at an unsurprisingly pricey £4.40, served in a frosted glass by a friendly barmaid; it made for a cool, refreshing change on a muggy evening.
This isn’t a bad place, in fact I rather liked it and would pop in again if I fancied something different.

Cocktail bar in a converted church (St Pauls). Impressive interior. No ale on here of course.
