Cafe bar from the 'industrial period' - rough brickwork, scaffold planks and overhead trunking - with a yard out the back and a couple of pavement tables at the front. Inside there is a seated area in each corner and a section of stools in the middle; also an upstairs (not open). The background music gave a laid-back feel. As described earlier, there is a stand of keg taps which included some fair craft from Verdant, Northern Brewing, Yonder, etc. Note that the craft beers are only dispensed in 2/3rds pint schooners - prices upper end but not disproportionate from similar brews elsewhere.

Not sure the review from Lester Ford below is about this pub as to my knowledge they have never served cask ale. They certainly weren't doing on our Sunday visit. It 's a pleasant little place and two floors, but the upstairs area is closed on a Sunday. There's a tiny little outside area at the rear, but as it was lashing it down this wasn't being used. No cask ale, but my craft keg was pleasant enough if somewhat cold and, as noted below king expensive.

A review from the end of November 2016 during a Friday night visit. Cracking little bar with an upbeat trendy crowd & bar staff to match!

4 ales, 1 cider and 2 top quality European lagers / fruit beers on tap. My pint of Allendale’s Pennine Pale Ale @ 4.0% was excellent.

The wife and I were on our way to the Brew York tap room but the lure of this bar was too great to pass , so we stopped for a quick drink, chatted, chilled and listened to the quality music being played by the bar staff.

Very busy at 8pm on a Friday night and definitely worth another visit.

A trendy bar/café on the popular Fossgate. The Fossgate Social is café by day and late night bar in the evenings but serves alcohol throughout. The bar is on the right as you enter with tables and chairs scattered all around and more located upstairs. The decor is modern and sheik with lots of wood and exposed brick in a style most of these places seem to have and there was some dimmed music playing. Sadly real ale was not available but there was a decent selection of craft keg beers with prices listed on a chalk board behind. To my frustration only 2/3 pints were served which really ticks me off as I don’t see why these places don’t offer a pint like any other place (maybe there scared people will realise there actually shelling out £5.60) im not exaggerating prices were horrific, Beaver town neck oil came in at £5.60 a Pint!!! Or £3.75 for 2/3 as well as several other s such as a Yorkshire larger (No mainstream keg was served). I opted for a more sensible priced house beer by Alendale which was a pale ale pale ale which was only (LOL) £4.35 and was cold and fizzy. Overall not very impressed with this place but it not catered for my type of crowd. Aside from the prices it was rather relaxing to sit here and have a spot of lunch so I can commend it for that. Not a bad place to take you wife/girlfriend and its quite trendy and quirky in a way woman would like but wouldn’t go out of my way to visit just for a drink.

Bar/cafe serving a "craft keg" selection( schooner glasses). Quite a small stripped back interior with a bike on one wall. Maybe not one for a session but does the job on a crawl.

Agree with the last review, but we found ourselves in there a couple of times while in York as the staff were friendly and we enjoyed the 2/3 of Magic Rock Villainous at 6.5% on our first visit, and a couple of days later we were in for a couple of the bottles. Sandwiches with great fillings on offer, so if you want something a little different, well worth a visit.

Unremittingly hip cafe-bar with four crafty keg founts, all beers sold in 2/3s - I had a bit of a struggle to get a half of Camden PA which was not too bad temperature wise but as fizzy as expected. There was a choice of Jaipur, Brooklyn Lager or Aspalls cider. There is also a very good choice of bottles in the fridge. It does coffee and cakes as well and there's a garden at the back. Naturally it's exposed brick on one wall, scuffed board floors and low seating. it obviously has very awesome hipster cred and I spotted a couple in one corner, shorts and facial hair to the fore. Still well worth a visit when taking in the Blue Bell and The Hop up the road.
