Renovated a bit since Blackthorn's review, below, but still a basic backstreet local. The larger bar to the right is now called a lounge bar, though it has various games and a dart board, making it less comfortable than the name implies. The other bar is tagged public bar. The latter has a pool table. The lino has gone, now replaced by wood laminate in the public bar and what looks like the original wooden floorboards elsewhere. It was full of elderly locals, an indication of which was the large number of mobility scooters parked on the fag butts outside. The barmaid was glued to her phone, but did eventually serve us I a fairly athletic way, stretching up to a high shelf to retrieve crisps. Pukka pies were available, but we would have had to wait 40 minutes for them to be warmed up in the glass heater on the bar, so we made do with the athletically-retrieved crisps, as much for the entertainment value as the nutrition. Tribute was the only ale on offer, and that was in average condition. Stan’s Cider was also on draft, and there was a dry pump. I don’t think this one justifies a re-visit.

A basic, street corner boozer just off of the High Street, this appears to be quite a locals pub and no doubt has a number of pub sports teams going on the fact that there were numerous trophies and shields dotted around, besides photographs of the various sports teams on the wall.

The main bar is a large, open room with a no frills appearance, lino on the floor and both a pool table and a darts board. A plasma screen was showing a football match, and there was also a projector although this was not in use on this occasion. A green tiled fire-place also appeared to be unused. A smaller room off to the side housed a further pool table and another darts board and I got glared at by one of the players for having the audacity to wander in here to have a look around. Beyond this was a somewhat cosier lounge bar with leather bench seating.

Food didn’t appear to feature prominently here, although there were a couple of notices advertising Sunday Lunches as well as a “Big Boy’s Breakfast” at £4.50. The solitary beer on tap was Red Castle Cream, although ciders were well represented with Thatcher’s Gold, Thatcher’s Traditional, and, unusually on draught, Natch.

Went for Bonfire Night 2010, great family do with friendly reception from the staff. The BBQ was cheep and tasty with Natch Cider to wash it down. Thatchers Traditional & Gold also available along with one real ale. A great evening out.
