Blackthorn _ left this review about The New Market

One of several pubs clustered around this part of the High Street, this is slightly better than many of the nearby options, but then that in itself is not really saying very much. It’s a two room pub with a large open room at the front and a smaller lounge at the rear.

The main room at the front has old wooden boards on the floor with lemon yellow paintwork. A large pool table sits centre stage, and there is also a darts board tucked away around the corner. An old Victorian tiled fire-palace was off to one side with a plasma mounted on the wall above it, although the volume was not on. Some stained glass windows above the bar spelt out the pub’s name and “Cuisine” although there was none of this in evidence.

The smaller room at the rear is somewhat cosier with dark wood panelling on the walls giving it something of a hotel drawing room feel. There’s a old leather sofa in the corner and a guitar player was strumming away on a recent Thursday evening visit. The barman was friendly enough, but some of the locals perched at the bar were using some rather offensive language and talking quite loudly, so it’s not somewhere I’ suggest bringing a young lady on your first date.

Unfortunately there were no cask ales on, just keg Gem. Ciders were Thatcher’s Gold and Thatcher’s Dry, although the latter was apparently off.

just reopened at start of November 2010. The staff are chatty and welcoming and the beer is well kept. Currently no real ales on tap but Bath Ales gem in Bottles. Licensee hopes to have the odd guest beer or cider over time and has a barrel of thatchers on the counter to start off with. The pub does have a juke box and large TV so it will be a music/sports bar.
