pleasant enough modern Spoons opposite the retail/leisure park. The beer choice was pretty drab but I preferred the general atmosphere here to the one in Liverpool I visited earlier in the day. Shiny place with loads of different areas to sit, inside and out.

A very smart and modern JDW, right on the promenade. There's a massive seating area at the front for those balmy, sunny days and a first floor terrace as well. The bar is just as you enter and is quite compact for a JDW. To the right are a couple of alcoves and to the rear is more of a dining area, complete with a new style open kitchen. Upstairs is much more seating in various styles, so it's deceptively large. A dismal range of beers on the bar though. The only one that was remotely interesting was from Peerless. When I asked for a pint the barmaid told me it wasn't on. I had a pint of something else that was so memorable that I've forgotten. Overall it's a very nice place, but do something with the beer selection.

Although this is listed in the JDW directory as a Lloyds I don't recall seeing any evidence of it apart from a rather average beer choice.
As described below it's a modern two tier place with a mostly wooden floor downstairs and a dining area plus a few alcoves at the rear.
Although there are two sets of five hand pumps there was much doubling up so the choice amounted to the JDW Trio Of Doom, Dunscar Amber & Monroe and Hook Norton Nerdherder IPA. I went for the Dunscar Amber (£2.15) which was in good nick.
Not one of the best JDWs but on a Summer Saturday early afternoon it seemed OK. Remarkably this one is in the 2016 GBG but that might say more about the other New Brighton pubs than the worthiness of this one.

The Master Mariner is a Wetherspoons that is situated on New Brightons promenade, but the views are not that good from the lower level, the upstairs room was closed on my early Saturday morning visit.
Once inside there is an irregular shaped room with an L shaped bar to the front left, the front area is bare boarded and the rear carpeted, the seating is the usual Spoons type with mainly normal tables and chairs.
The choice of guest beers was pretty poor for a Spoons,i had a drink of Dunscar Gold which was not to my taste,i also noted beers from Elgoods and Arbour, plus the Spoons regulars like Doom Bar and GK Abbot.
I found this to be a decent enough Spoons, just a shame the upstairs room was shut.

Real Ale Ray left this review about The Master Mariner (JD Wetherspoon)

This is a modern style Spoons with timber clad walls and a Mediterranean colour theme throughout. The barman was friendly and very helpful. There were ten handpumps with a couple of the beers repeated, I went for the Wickwar Christmas Cracker, which was quite normal for a Christmas beer. We sat upstairs and had a good view of the river. There was an outside balcony and a front terrace.

If you are looking for a quiet drink and something to eat then this place is bearable if you are desperate I suppose. But given that there is now a vast array of places to eat at the new Marine Point Development on the New Brighton sea front my advice would be to spend your had earned cash in one of the other bars or restaurants at Marine Point, all of which are much much better then the Master Mariner. The food is microwaved rubbish, the staff badly trained, the real ale is badly kept and the lager is awful and tasted off to me. The food and drink in the Hungry Horse, La Tascas, ChimiChanga, Marino Lounge and even the Casino is much much better than anything you will be served in this very poor Wetherspoons. On the whole Wetherspoon's aren't normally this bad but it appears as though they have tried extra hard to make this place as tragically bad as possible.

Even the decor seems cold, boring and drab. This is easily the worst Wetherspoons I have ever been into in every possible way, and I have been into a lot of Wetherspoons over the years.

If you are looking for a drink on a Friday or Saturday night then just don't bother. I witnessed the door staff acting like complete and utter thugs whose only aim appears to be to cause trouble as opposed to prevent it. I'm sure you've already read the review on here by somebody else about fingers being broken for no apparent reason by door staff at this place, well I can believe it. I overheard one of the thugs (sorry, doorstaff) telling a young lad that they would smash his skull in, all he did was ask what time they closed. They all then started laughing like neanderthals knowing that they outnumbered the young lad 3 to 1 and he would not retalaliate. This is totally unacceptable behaviour. I left shortly afterwards.

My advice - If you are looking for a decent real ale go elsewhere. If you are looking for something to eat go elsewhere, if you are looking for somewhere with a nice atmosphere go elsewhere and if you out to have a nice time and a few drinks go elsewhere. Wetherspoons have their work cut out to turn this place around. time.

The Master Mariner is a Lloyds No1 that opened in April this year at a cost of just short of 2 Million pound and is named after master mariner Henry Cubbon and former resident who died inn 1855.
The pub is quite modern looking for a Wethy's,and is on 2 levels with a bar on each and a wheelchair friendly lift connecting the two floors. There is also a smart upper balcony offering pleasant views over the Mersey.
Due to the cider festival the range of real ales was a little limited although the choice did include Directors and Spitfire.
