A lively back street local, one of several in what must have been a fairly prosperous suburb just outside Wigan's town centre, if the size of the pub buildings is anything to go by. (The nearby Pagefield, now closed, is enormous - as is the Springfield.) The Bird i'th Hand (also known as the Hen Ole) has two doors, one marked lounge and the other vault, though the window glass lettering identifies this part of the building as originally "outdoor dept." and "bar". We went through the vault door, which leads into the central part of the building where the bar counter is situated, with large rooms to both left and right. It was busy with pre-match drinkers or maybe just a regular Saturday crowd, and we had to wait a few minutes while regulars were served. The two hand pumps had Sharps Doom Bar and Wainwright, but I had noticed M&B Mild on one of the keg fonts, so we went for that. We quite enjoyed the atmosphere here, and the beer was at least drinkable if nothing to write home about.

A large pub which has been extended. Two small rooms and a large room with pool table served by a single bar. I saw one cask ale. A decent enough pub.
