Rob Hunter left this review about Northern Quarter

Was going to pay this a visit as part of a crawl in Huddersfield a couple of weekends ago but unfortunately when we got there they told us that they were not opening until 9pm. WhatPub says it opens at 5pm, so not sure if they were having issues on the day or if opening times have changed. Check before making a special visit.

Once upon a time this was the tap for Hand Drawn Monkey brewery and there is still evidence of this especially on the floor in the left hand room. The interior has been extensively described by others below, so as usual I won't bother. I didn't mind this place at all, despite the ridiculous height of the bar. My pint of Three Fiends Bad Uncle Barry was in good nick as well. I'd be interested to call in on an evening to see what it's like then as we were the only people in the bar during the PuG crawl, so it was full of reprobates. :-))

Apparently Huddersfield’s original micro pub, this is now an independent Craft beer house after the demise of the Hand Drawn Monkey brewery last year. Full marks for keeping it as a venue to try a good range of decent Keg and Cask beers but I didn’t really warm to this one.
Up some steps from the street level entrance the bar room on the right with its ridiculously low floor or ridiculously high bar top depending on where you stand (see what I did there :-) ) isn’t that comfortable a space for a beer, and then the main sitting room to the left with its distressed furniture and shabby chic sofa seating , which apparently has been improved since opening, still too closely resembled some of the dodgy student flats I dossed in during the late 70’s when I had no money. And if I was sitting in one of the reclaimed sofas I would be constantly worried that the bits of plasterboard nailed to the ceiling were going to collapse onto my bonce at any given moment to be able to enjoy the beer.
For the record Three Fields Bad Uncle Barry, Mallinson's Stadium, Great Heck Patrick and Settle Aftermire were on the four pumps and the Mallinson’s Stadium Pale was perfectly passable.
I can fully appreciate that I am probably not the target demographic for this place and perhaps this bar comes to life when its full of young things with a live band going in the back room. But with the increasing number of new craft beer bars setting up round the country I’ve seen it done a lot better than here.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about Wood Street Craft Beer House

Semi-modern two-room bar located up a few steps inside the front door. The compact bar on one side has the most ridiculously high counter and just a few tall metal stools around the periphery. On the other side, there is a small lounge area plus a number of canteen-style tables awkwardly placed on a couple of wide steps. Live music advertised. Four real ales on handpump: Mallinson's Stadium, Great Heck Patrick, Settle Aftermire and Bad Uncle Barry from Three Fiends (£1.50, half). Overall, a mixed bag, but the unfortunate smell of drains certainly didn't help first impressions.

ORIGINAL REVIEW July 2014.
A micropub that acts as the tap for Hand Drawn Monkey ,this may be designed to be shabby chic, but just appeared shabby on my visit. The steep climb up the entrance steps led to a section on the left being refurbed and closed off ,just leaving the area around the serving bar which had a drinking shelf and eleven high stolls to pitch down on.The room slopes to the rear, meaning that trying to access the front of the bar I was made to feel like a kid in a sweet shop barely able to reach my pint off the top.Walk to the rear of the bar for easier access. There is a decent collection of beer bottles as decoration on one wall, but surprisingly for a micropub there is a lot of emphasis on food such as tapas and antipastis plus more substantial dishes. There are 6 craft keg offerings besides the three handpumps which were drawing Monkey Loves Hops 17,Untraditional Traditional Bitter and a highly unusual Z Beer described as red ale with almond and vanilla which didn't work for me.The barmaid was advising punters to go with Monkey Loves Hops which in retropect may have been a decent call.
Not sure that this place would make it onto my list of must visit pubs in Town,it's novel and trendy but that alone may not be enough in a Town with such white hot real ale competition for somebody like me.

UPDATE
The Hand Drawn Monkey brewery has ceased to exist,so a rotating selection of real ale is now available from 4 handpumps, which on my latest visit meant Three Fiends Bad Uncle Barry,Mallinsons Stadium Pale,Settle Attermire Session IPA(decent) and Great Heck Patrick (warm and out of condition)
The far room has now been completed in the same shabby and not so chic way,and on entering there was a very strange aerosol air freshner smell wafting around, possibly in expectation of the arrival of the PuG crawl. Not sure I would readily return here, there are better options nearby.

Will Larter left this review about Wood Street Craft Beer House

Despite the four hand pumps, six keg lines and numerous bottles and cans, I got an impression that music was more important than beer. It certainly had the feel of a music bar rather than a beer house. Maybe this impression was the result of listening to some pretty atrocious thrash metal while I supped my half of a beer called Dark Side from Three Fiends, which was fine, though a little on the pricey side at £3.30 a pint. This sort of place presumably floats someone's boat, as it seems to be thriving, but I wouldn't want to do more than pop back for a half - a session in here would not be my idea of a good time.

This is a somewhat awkward place with the steep steps and the high bar creating the sweet shop vibe. I was told by the barman that this was officially the second highest bar servery in the country, the highest being one I'd been to years ago called the White Swan in Doncaster. I didn't take too much notice of the decor but on my Saturday afternoon visit it was quiet.
The four hand pumps had Titanic Iceberg, Three Friends Dark Side Black IPA, Great Heck Blonde and Mallinson's Mount Chivo. I went for the Black IPA which was slightly on the warm side but tasted great. This place is aimed at the younger set and is not really a micropub for a few reasons but the most compelling is that they don't actually claim to be one.
Does it deserve the GBG 2016 listing? I thought the three non GBG ones visited were better than this (the Lord Wilson is confined to Room 101 so doesn't really exist). Despite that I quite liked it and would return.

Real Ale Ray left this review about Wood Street Craft Beer House

This micropub changed hands last September, so Hand Drawn Monkey are out of the picture. I thought the place was drab and little effort has been made with the place. We sat in the left hand side room and wondered why someone had nailed up thin sheets of hardboard across an already dilapidated suspended ceiling. The walls looked to have been painted from someone's shed where they had come across a pile of depressing colours nobody wants. The music playing was big band jazz from Spotify. We went for the Three Friends Brewhouse Boomer which was uninspiring, so embarrassingly took it to the loo and lashed it down the sink. Would I visit here again, No!

As noted this is a smallish place. The bar is to your right and if you're under 6'8" you may need to climb a ladder to see what's on if the place is full. 4 handpumps for real ale and several more fore crafty beers. The left side area has some forest-like painting covering the wall. The music was quite good with Indie stuff being played. Its a bit students but fine.

Wood Street Craft Beer House is a micro pub that is situated on a narrow street and fairly close to the train station.
Once inside the bar is on the right side, there are tall stools and a drinking shelf on the left side and a leather settee to the front, the rear has benches and a long table.
I had a drink of Great Heck Dave, which went down very well,i also noted Magic Rock Ringmaster, there were other beers i failed to note.
There was background music playing.
I thought this pub had a really nice laid back atmosphere.
