Classic Chef & Brewer with all the usual interior stylings (‘fakey weathered beams’ as Soupy so eloquently puts it). I only came here because of the GBG listing, which I admit I was dubious about. A win at the bar though with five ales on and two genuine guests in Mumbles Brewery Red Dragon (NBSS 4) and Tiny Rebel Birra Colada (4), both beers in fantastic shape, someone in here is really doing a job in the cellar. An unexpectedly joyful visit.

This is a detached Chef & Brewer chain pub and eatery, with patio and beer garden areas. It is in the GBG. Underneath the garish exterior does in fact beat the heart of a Victorian (at least) pub of the same name. The cottage style pub (three upper windows and two lower, flanking the entrance)is still visable, despite the green gable end, the chocolate quoins and the incongruous conservatory. The rest of the frontage is in white. The exterior designer was then allowed to run amok inside, with an open plan room part partitioned by fakey weathered beams and walls of different colours; red, green, white, coffee and purple. It is of course aimed at the dining experience, which is why you never feel too comfy in such places when just having a drink - usually you get asked if you are ordering food when you get served. Anyhow - the modern ubiquitous look - including the chopped wood (which would have been a fun pun on the name of the pub if every third pub in the land didn't do it) was balanced off a little by some great artistic B&W photos on the walls by local photographers - something different! The TV wasn't on and the music was 'chilled' and at a decent level. The service was a real plus - very friendly. The clientele were all dining, as far as i could make out. Beer; usual tap stuff with Abbot, Young's Bitter, Butcombe Bitter and Cottage Golden Arrow on handpull. The Cottage was OK, despite being a little flat. Many like the modern look, but interiors like this are now ten-a-penny. Chef&B - I know you like a rainbow colour scheme, but you didn't have to employ Bungle, George and Zippy to get it.
