Another ale house style pub, sadly only handled mugs available for that "Get Carter" moment, the beers OK. The front bar has stripped brick while the back room is traditionally furnished with settles and Britannia tables. There are lots of old photos, a mass of horse brasses and other brassware. It's a neat recreation of an old style pub.

Called in a few times since my first review. It's settled down now into a good little pub. 6 beers available on our latest visit and over the 2 days I tried 4 of them, all were in good nick. Friendly bar staff and customers add to the comfortable ambience. Up a point for me.

Brand new bar owned by the same people who have Walters and The Lion & Key. It had only been open a couple of weeks on our visit, so it was packed. There's a front room with the bar on the right as you enter which is mainly standing. To the rear is another room with old settles and tables along with stuffed animals etc. It's brand new, but looks old. All that they missed was a dust gun to add to the olde worlde atmosphere. Four cask ales available on our visit, all served in dimpled glasses. Not the most exciting range of beers compared to the other 2 pubs, but my pint of Hobgoblin was well kept. The staff were pretty clueless as well, but I'm guessing that this will settle down once they get into the swing of things. We quite liked the place, but it was so full we only called in the once during our 2 days in Hull. We'll visit again next time we're in Hull to see what it's like when it's quieter.

If you intend to visit Wm. Hawkes, you first have to know where it is, and you'll have to look out for it - there's no blackboard outside promoting Sky Sports (no TV), nor windows advertising chilled lagers (none of those either); just a simple shop front, with the name discreetly picked out in gold above the door.

Inside, it's pretty dark, with illumination mainly by candle (if you've come out dressed to the nines, you may want to be aware that there is a fair amount of dried candle wax on the seating). Two small-ish rooms, with the bar on the right in the first of them. On that bar are 9 pumps and a tap for Stowford. The choice is not dissimilar to the other 2 pubs in the group (Lion & Key and Walters). Price was the same (£3.10), as was the excellent service from the friendly bar-maid, along with the lack of custom. A shame about the latter: I daresay it picks up later on - it certainly should as this is another must-visit on a Hull Old Town pub crawl. In fact, given the history of the building and the high quality of the interior decoration, I'd say that any tourist really should pop in.
