A prominent street corner pub split across two floors and forming an unusual curved shape, it’s a little tucked away in the backstreets but is nonetheless only a few seconds stroll from the harbour and is well worth making the effort to check out.
Although due to the slope of the road there is an entrance door on the upper level, this appeared to be unused with all access via the lower floor which is where the bar counter is. This is an attractive and traditional room, with slate style tiling on the floor, unpainted wooden beams on the ceiling and exposed stonework on the walls. A number of flags were draped from the beams, as well as a selection of county coats of arms fixed up in between them. Lighting was nautical in style, including red and green lamps above the bar, and there were a few more shields on the walls as well as a brewery mirror or two and some old photographs on the window sill. An old fireplace was off to one side, and a large barrel provided a spot for vertical drinking. An unusual feature was a copper pot behind the bar which for some reason was attached to a pulley and rose up and down at irregular intervals. We eventually worked out it was linked to the door and acted as a closure device! A decent 80’s soundtrack was playing at a reasonable level. The upper room is a little more contemporary in style with red maroon plasterwork on the walls and a comfy Chesterfield sofa.
Beers on tap were Tribute and Proper Job from St Austell along with Bass which went down well, whilst two further pumps appeared unused. Ciders meanwhile were Sandford’s Devon Red and Thatcher’s Gold. Overall, I really liked this pub, it has a pleasant ambience, there was a good crowd in and a friendly landlord. Certainly the best of the ones around the immediate vicinity of the harbour.

Reopened as the New Quay Inn. Note that the pub is only open Thursday - Sunday and only 12 - 4:30 on Sunday.

This pub has a dual personality as it is a traditional local drinkers pub during the day but more of a music venue on the evenings. The narrow building between a main road and a pedestrian alleyway has two rooms, on the main road side and at street level is the music venue and bar which was closed during this visit, on the alleyway side is a tiny basement style public bar, this has a small bar counter across the back wall opposite the entrance, white wood settles, white beamed ceiling and exposed stone walls, on the left of the room is a rustic stone fire place with a cast iron grate and a shabby grey leather sofa, a couple of the short stools were solid wood with an old bearded mans face carved into them, like Zeus or more likely Poseidon. On the walls were modern paintings by local artists. Be warned if you have a weak heart, the walls in the gents toilets are virtually pornographic with a montage of sleazy magazine clippings pasted all over.
Regular ale is currently Otter Ale with two guest beers, which on this occasion were Bays Topsail and Bays Up’n’under (brewed for the rugby world cup 2011). The Otter and Up’n’under were both in good condition in my opinion.
The public bar is a brilliant traditional room with loads of character, I felt very comfortable in here sat on the high stools at the bar with the regulars, one of whom was accompanied by their dog. I didn’t see any evidence of food or a menu and it’s not the kind of place that you would take the kids. I enjoyed the beer and the atmosphere so I will return when in the area again.

Probably the best pub for beer. 3 real ales kept on good form in an old world style boozer.
