Alan Hurdle left this review about Mort Subite

Mort Subite is a Belgian cellar bar "hidden" below Riddles Bar, opposite Altrincham market. It was opened by the original owners of Le Trappiste a few doors away (Le Trappiste later moved round the corner and was renamed "The Brew House" (now "Pi"), then a 3rd bar opened on the original premises called the "Belgian Bar", making Altrincham a Belgian beer mecca).
I called in Mort Subite on a sunny Saturday afternoon just after their opening time. As I walked down the steps and through the door, it was like entering a black coal cellar rather than a cellar bar with it taking several minutes for my eyes to adjust to the fact that there were any lights on at all. I was the only customer and was greeted by the landlord. Ordering is from your table by a beer menu. The landlord put a small lamp on my table to enable me to read the beer menu (He would prefer it to be a little lighter but his co-landlord prefers a very dark club-like atmosphere.) After 3 or 4 recommended strong beers and a long chat with the landlord and the only two other customers, I left with a "warm glow" feeling, quite different from the feeling after several pints of English beer. As I walked outside, I was amazed to see that it was still sunny and not the darkness of the evening. I had spent the last few hours in a completely different world!
Edit for location update.
