A large drinking barn in a semi-basement of a building that seems to have been repurposed from some other use. It was quite lively for a Monday lunchtime, with a small group clustered around the bar and people dotted around in twos and threes at tables. There are four hand pumps here, with a cider on one and two beers from local Purple Moose and distant Greene King. I went for Cwrw Madog, which I'm not sure I've had before, and although it seemed at first to be NBSS 3 I detected a hint of an off flavour as it warmed up - perhaps not enough of it had been pulled through to start the day?

I don't know why this pub should have been so much busier at an unpropitious time of the day and week than the Albion just around the corner. Neither would pull up any trees as far as I'm concerned, but if I have an hour to kill before my train out of here another time, I would be more likely to go for the Albion. But only marginally.

The Castle consists of a long narrow room with the bar along the right after the entrance. There are some tiles along the bar counter then a wooden floor with a carpeted area along the windows. The TV screens were silent and I also noticed a projector screen but a music track was playing. The tables had menus with Wetherspoon inspired food offers. There were a few others in on my Monday afternoon visit.
Although there are four hand pumps only Brain's SA and Doom Bore were available. The SA (£2.30) was in good nick and good value despite being a rather boring drink.
This place may be one of the better options in Bangor.
