Nicely located behind some, err, trees in the market place. It has recently been done-up inside, sporting fairly neutral tones with a bit of battleship grey thrown in. There’s also some interesting red and black chequerboard flooring and some tongue and groove wood panelling. The best seat is the curved bay window with welcoming banquette, which we bagged. Six pumps at the bar with five on; brews from Blue Monkey, Titanic, Blackshale, and Pentrich, served-up by a friendly barmaid. All the beers we had were in good or very good nick. An 80s soundtrack was playing with some brilliant out-of-time singing along from the other end of the pub. We stayed for longer than originally planned, which in itself is a recommendation. Best ales in Ripley.

A very pleasing looking pub, with a rewarding choice of six well kept ales. The interior has a decent sized L shaped lounge with the bar facing you as you enter, a mix of carpets and tiles, exposed brick walls and a sand stone fireplace retains the traditional pub feel. The bar area had a mahogany bar top, with a painted blue bar front. The pub also had a collection of pumpclips on the walls. There was a choice of a dozen ciders and a small barrel on the floor near the bar was used as a water container, along with a bowl for your thirsty four legged friend. I went for the Pentrich Blue Sky Thinking, which was excellent.

Will Larter left this review about The Thorn Tree

A busy market place pub with a very welcome new emphasis on real ale; what I like to think of as Quality rather than Carling. As well as half a dozen beers on hand pump there were a similar number of polypins of cider apparent behind the bar at the time of my visit. The beers were all from local breweries: Leatherbritches, Dukeries, Tollgate, Shipstones, LandLocked and Falstaff. (There's a Camra discount of 15%, but I'm not sure how my beer at £3.15 per pint turned out to be £1.45 a half after the discount.) Definitely worth a visit.
