Peculiar looking building and painted a pretty foreboding charcoal colour. Inside is a fairly dark place with squared wood panelling over a number of rooms / old buildings knocked together, with the bar oddly at the farthest part back. Four ales on; Thornbridge Jaipur, St Austell Proper Job (good) Brampton (ok) and Theakston OP (vinegar edge, taken off when the server saw me wrinkling my nose on receipt). Chatty barmaid made us feel welcome, as did the amazing £3.95 meal deal (cob+crisps+drink). Worth popping by if you’re in Ripley for a few beers, even if quality of the ale was somewhat mixed on my visit – that meal deal won’t eat itself. 6.5

Following a refurbishment, this pub has reopened under a slight change of name and with an exterior now painted a rather dull charcoal grey. The interior is smart, with high tables and chairs near the bar and bench seats and sofas further away. There's an area for smokers at the rear.

The bar is on the right, with a range of real ciders and ales on hand pumps. There's a complex pricing system, with some beers apparently 50p more on Friday and Saturday nights (or 50p cheaper during the week, if you prefer to think of it that way). I paid £1.40 for a half of Dancing Duck Dark Drake, but it took about as long to work out the price as it did to pour the beer. The other beers at the time of my visit were Wychwood Hobgoblin Gold, Greene King Abbot and Thornbridge Jaipur. This pub, and the nearby Thorn Tree, mark an improvement in Ripley's real ale scene since my last visit.
