Walking through Matlock Bath yesterday we were pretty fed up to find that Toad is now closed.

It looks like it's been closed for some time as the windows are filthy and there's loads of junk inside.

What a shame as we were looking forward to this one.

This pub has now reverted to Bateman's, whatever arrangement they had with the Ashover brewery having ended. There are five hand pumps on the small bar in what to me was a surprisingly small room - the grand-looking façade seems to promise something much larger. There were only two beers on at the time of my visit, on a wet January weekday afternoon, Bateman's Yella Belly and Okells Jiarg (pronounced yarg - the Manx word for red, apparently). I had an interesting half hour here, chatting with the friendly landlady and a few locals - I even found myself dispensing advice about not trying to keep up with people who are drinking in rounds, to a young man who was nursing a hangover! The real pub atmosphere just tips the scales for me in deciding between this and the Fishpond, despite the comparatively restricted beer choice. (I'm sure there are more beers on when the level of trade justifies it.)

The last time we came in here it was a Batemans tied house.
This pub is now run by Ashover Brewery there were five real ales on the bar,we tried a couple of them The first was Ashover Poets Tipple and this was a very nice amber coloured bitter the second drink was new to me and this was Buxton Moor Top this was a very light coloured beer but it was a bit bland, the other beers were Ashover Coffin Lane Stout,Whim Flower Power and Batemans XXXB.
The pub is open plan with stone floors and the bar is to the left as you enter.
We though this was a really nice pub with a good choice of beers on the bar.

This pub was just the same as the last time we went in it but it was a lot bussier and there were only three real ales on but they were in the process of pulling some more beers through.
We had a drink of Ashover Hydro and this was a very nice drink.
I still think this is one of the better pubs in Matlock Bath and i always enjoy having a drink in here.

Popped in here as an excuse to have ten minutes to myself for a quick pint, having yomped up the hillside only to find Temple Hotel shut. So I was really surprised and pleased to find a number of interesting ales on the go. The two I sampled from Ashover Brewery (who I subsequently discovered run the place) were both served in good form at a reasonable price. The pub itself is pretty small, a lot cosier than it looks. Daily papers were available and there was some outside seating if I fancied being bohemian (I did). Live music was also advertised. A good little find and I'd be happy to return.
