A relatively recent opening located on the site of what was formerly The Cuban, which seemed to have gone downhill in recent years with frequent complaints about noise and alleged breaches of the licencing conditions. This pub gets it’s name from the fact that it contains seven bowling lanes, and along with various other activities it’s really now much more of a games venue that happens to have a bar rather than your traditional pub. That said, there’s certainly no restriction on just popping in for a pint and there are plenty of tables available to sit at should you wish to do so.
Internally it’s a large, mostly open plan space with a central bar counter. It’s got quite a stark, industrial feel to it with bare concrete floor, ceiling joists and supporting pillars, some of which had been sprayed with graffiti. There was also a large mural on one wall. The bar counter was exposed brickwork which was perhaps marginally more interesting, and there was some artificial foliage around which was presumably a rather half-hearted attempt to soften the ambience somewhat. Lighting levels were quite low and it was all rather noisy, due to a combination of the bowling, punters, music and harsh acoustics. Besides the bowling, other gaming options included darts, pool and basketball.
There were no real ales available unfortunately, with just Harviestoun Neck Oil being the sole keg offering that I spotted. Ciders fared slightly better with Orchard Thieves and the Bristol Cider Company’s Bristol Steam, which was a new one on me.

Now known as The Cuban, this is a recent addition to the Bristol pub scene located just off Millennium Square and occupies the building that was at one time a short-lived Hooters outlet but has been empty for some time. Judging by the lack of custom when we popped in on a recent Sunday lunch time, this place may not last too long either. The barman seemed friendly enough though, and it is, I suppose, early days yet.
It’s all one big open space, although divided in to a couple of different areas with partitioning down the middle and a raised area at the front. Paintwork is predominantly black which is perhaps a little gloomy, and as is the vogue in many venues these days the exposed cable ducting in the ceiling gives it a somewhat industrial feel. The flooring was predominantly wood strip except for the raised area at the front which was some kind of straw matting and some terracotta tiling in front of the bar. Elsewhere the décor followed a Cuban theme with large photo montages on the walls, a section of exposed brick with a Cuba logo painted on to it, photographs of Castro, flags, tropical foliage and even a few flamingos.
The venue appears to be primarily targeted at diners with many of the tables being laid up for food, although there were a few stools at the bar and the raised section at the front was perhaps intended to resemble a Cuban living room with pastel colour boards, chandeliers (hanging from the exposed cable trays!), Chesterfield armchairs and other rather ornate old chairs. Elsewhere the seating was a conventional mix of tables and chairs with booths up and down either side of the central partition. There is also a stage area to the left, so perhaps live music features on occasions.
Food wise, the menu followed what is presumably a Cuban theme. It looked broadly similar to Mexican which is I suppose likely to be the case given it’s location, and was divided in to sections such as mains, grills, fish and salads as well as a few sharing paellas. Most of the mains were in the £10 - £15 price range, although there were a couple available for less than this and there was also a tapas menu with most choices around £4/£5. We didn’t eat on this occasion, but it looked tempting enough and I daresay we will return to try it out.
Unfortunately there were no ales on tap, real or otherwise, at least not any that I spotted. The menu did mention draught Worthingtons, but I didn’t see this on the bar and in any case is hardly likely to entice anyone to make a point of coming here. On the plus side though, they did have Thatcher’s Gold cider on tap. If rum is more your thing though, there were no less than 131 to choose from.

Fantastic for blokes who like beer,burgers and erm b**bs! One of only three in the UK this bar/restaurant makes a fun night out.7/10
