Will Larter left this review about The Carlton

The sole outlet for real ale in Stornoway (the nearby arts centre An Lanntair has some according to Camra, though not at the time of my visit). As such it is to be applauded, though having said that this is not a pleasant pub. The bar, which has a strange curve to it and is partly constructed of barrel staves, is at the back of a very plain, longish room. There is just one hand pump on the bar, and this had a very nice Isle of Skye Red Cuillin. This was especially welcome after all the dreadful Scottish keg beer that a holiday in this part of the world always entails, but it was very good by any standard.

I was here before about 10 years ago, and I would swear that the pool table, plonked in the middle of the floor, has got the same cloth on it now as then. There is a TV screen at the far end from the bar, showing a music videos channel and playing much too loud. Consequently there was no conversation and no atmosphere. Worth a visit if you like real ale, but apart from that this is one of the worst pubs I have drunk in.
