A large, modern hotel and restaurant, glass fronted, with a very corporate feel. It's ideal for large parties, but it is rather lacking as a pub. The food is very good, well prepared and served by friendly, engaging staff. The beer lets it down, though, in my opinion – no real ale, the closest thing they have is Pedigree on keg, while the selection of ciders also on tap is uninspiring. All the drinks were bland and overcooled. A good place to come for a special meal if you have cash to spare, but if you want a decent pint you can walk through the alley opposite to one of the good ale pubs in the village.

Hmmm... it's just gone down in my estimation after our latest visit for Mother's Day lunch - the single thin slice of roast beef was, I felt, taking the p*ss. Won't return for Sunday lunch when there are several good establishments within a reasonable distance offering somewhat more substantial portions!

This is our favourite bar and restaurant and my wife and I come here about once every six weeks or so. We always eat out at least twice a week and always compare wherever we are to Lanes - and Lanes always comes out as superior! The ambience is superb - contemporary style melded within an Edwardian Rectory and the welcome is always warm and friendly. The bar only has one beer but, much to my wife's delight, sells champagne by the glass (£6 a time).

This is probably the only place within miles that offers fine dining and the food, cooked to order, is absolutely superb (although trenchermen may find the portions on the small side - order extras) and nothing is too much trouble for the chefs or waiting staff. The only downside is that the menu could be a shade more extensive and the range of extras a little more varied and exciting.

This is the only place locally that you are able to dress for dinner and not feel out of place. Unfortunately, in this day and age, dressing for dinner for most people seems to imply denim jeans - we even saw one diner wear a stetson throughout his meal without the excuse of being American - this place really should have a dress code!

As far as value goes, I consider it excellent value for money - typically our evening comprises a pint of ale, 2 glasses of champagne, a shared bottle of wine, two three-course meals with extras and coffees for about £80.

Lanes would have scored 10/10 but for only having one ale and a menu that could be a shade more extensive. Having said that, it remains the only place I've ever rated as high as 9/10.

As far as the hotel is concerned, we have stayed here several times (and we only live about four miles away) and are able to thoroughly recommend the accomodation, the gym and spa - all achieve a 10/10.
