Two room locals redoubt via an entry porch. The right hand side is labelled ‘snug’ but there is nothing snug about it, just a stripped-back public bar with the Rugby Union World Cup on the tellybox plus a dart board. The left side is plusher and had a dozen punters in, though a pure sausage fest bar the teenage barmaid who was on the end of some good-natured ribbing from said Richmonds. The salmon, vomit and anaemic pea colour scheme is atrocious but there was a bit of atmosphere at least. A single cask of Butcombe Original which was in decent nick (NBSS 3). A fair local. 5.5

A traditional old pub in a residential part of Nailsea, it’s very much a local’s pub and is unlikely to have changed much in decades consequently feeling somewhat dated rather than having any “olde worlde” charm. It consists of a couple of bars along with a beer garden at the rear.

The larger bar was to the left and a smaller snug to the right, although we did not investigate this. The central bar counter serves both bars. Decor wise it follows the traditional and unimaginative old pub ambience with red patterned carpet on the floor, red velour on the seats, red curtains at the windows, and so on. The paintwork is a mixture of deep salmon and cream and there are a few old black beams on the ceiling. Several copper pans were hung on the walls as well as a few horse brasses and such like.

Beers on tap were Butcombe and Sharp’s Atlantic, whilst a third pump appeared to have run out. Ciders meanwhile were Ashton Press, Thatcher’s Haze and somewhat unusually on draught, Natch.

I took over the pub in March 2005, the 2004 landlord is no longer associated with the White Lion. It is now exactly as you would expect it to be... a friendly, warm and welcoming traditional local that serves 3 excellent real ales along with a great selection of lagers and ciders.
