Radge local. Initially less terrifying than it looks from the outside - it’s a long rectangular place with dark varnished plank wood on most surfaces, a load of old black and white photos and a fibreglass shark hanging out of the wall, with a mixture of strung plastic fauna and fairy lights at the far end which is where you find the bar once you've navigated past the dominant pool table. Pretty basic set of kegs though Beavertown is on for the interlopers. I decided for a half of Guinness which came in a pint glass from the freezer. Deep house cuts on the stereo. So better than initially expected, given my expectations were pretty low to begin with. Although inevitably there was a rumble in the jungle just as I was beginning to settle in which lasted two rounds before reaching its inevitable conclusion. On the plus side, I was left to my own devices despite clearly not fitting the pub’s core demographic and the barman was a friendly chap.

The Dog and Duck wasn’t on my list, but I liked the name and the frontage intrigued me so went in. I wish I hadn’t bothered to be honest. This is a long thin dimly lit bar with a late night student feel. At the front is a pool table that was being used by a couple of numpties and dotted around were a few students who definitely spend more time in here than in their lectures. The bar up the left wall supports standard and premium keg. The music was gangster rap, to the delight of the aforementioned numpties. There are some old pump clips around the walls so once upon a time this place served cask, but not now. I was glad to leave.
