Blackthorn _ left this review about Lido

Not a pub in the usual sense, but a combined bar, restaurant and swimming pool (!). The lido was derelict for many years but was then rescued from demolition and reopened about ten years ago after an extensive refurbishment. It’s certainly quite unusual to be sat having a drink and having swimmers going up and down just a few feet away on the other side of the glass. The restaurant is well regarded although we did not eat on this occasion.

The bar area is on the lower of the two levels, and this is quite a long, narrow room with the full height glazing giving good views of the pool which is quite attractive with numerous hanging baskets at the end. Décor wise it’s quite modern and is must be a new build – I assume originally there may have been changing cubicles on both sides. The flooring was aqua blue tiles whilst all the woodwork was also pale blue with darker blue paint on the long bar counter. A few old pictures of other lidos were on the walls, although not, as far as I could see, any of this one. There were also a few further tables outside along the pool edge, although from what I could see of it if you sat here you were liable to get splashed. We didn’t study the menu closely, but it looked to be all of the tapas variety; whether this is the same as the restaurant upstairs, I’m not sure.

Unfortunately there were no real ales on tap, or much of anything else either come to that – just their own Lido Lager. The menu offered a selection of bottles including a choice of three ciders, all Spanish. Unfortunately I didn’t note the beers. It is strictly table service only it would appear, and of course, for the privilege of that there is a service charge slapped on. I wouldn’t have minded quite so much if they were quick and efficient, but I reckon we must have been waiting around 10 – 15 minutes after ordering for our four bottles to arrive, and at the equivalent of £7.32 a pint that all seemed a bit much. This may well be a decent place to eat, but as somewhere just for a drink, it falls woefully short.

As Blackthorn suggests not a pub so just go next door for a massive selection of draft ale in The Victoria. Revisited today for the first time since 1996. No real changes.
