A village pub just off the main tourist route past Taunton but definitely not a tourist trap. It’s a Wadworth house, and it’s jolly expensive – possibly the most expensive village pub in the area for beer. There is a car park at the back, with a steep gravelled slope which makes it slightly hazardous for motorcycles, a shame given that they host bike club events and support the Blood Bike charity. Next to the car park is a low building which looks like a WW2 POW camp but is actually a skittle alley. There is a small garden with basic tables and benches, plus a smoking pavillion. The pub is entered from the road at the front or via a conservatory at the back. There are 2 main bar areas, both with plenty of tabls for diners. Food is basic pub grub, and there is a lot of it. The landlord and landlady were a bit gruff with us at first, but they warmed up as we bought more beer. As well as the bikes, they support the Royal Marines charity, holding various raffles, quizzes and auctions to raise money. Ales on were IPA, 6X and Swordfish, all in fair condition. I’d be happy to come back for an event but the high prices put me off making it a regular venue.
