Owned, like the nearby pub, by the Muncaster Castle estate, this hotel has had a reputation for good beer for a number of years so I was keen to try it out. It's a traditional hotel, smartly turned out both inside and out, and the bar is easily found off the reception area. It is the sort of afterthought that hotel bars generally are, and I must admit to being a little disappointed that it was not more publike. There are doors (or French windows, if you prefer) out to a pleasant courtyard at the back, where the family coat of arms has been reproduced on the floor using varying sizes and colours of pebbles from the beach, and we took our beers out here so that my brother could smoke.

Ravenglass is an interesting old village, dating back to Roman times if not before. I'd have to say that the hotel is one of the least interesting aspects though - WhatPub states that it's 16th century, but you'd never guess it from looking at it. The two local ales on the bar - not all that local actually, being from Hesket Newmarket in the north of the county and Kendal in the east - were in good condition. Even though the Bowness Bay Swallow Gold was not really to my taste, I like the way this brewery's beers are made, so it went down a treat. Not sure I'd come here another time, though, given the other options in Ravenglass.

This is a nice hotel, well run and very comfortable. It is a little pricey but you get quite a lot for you money. There is a great restaurant and a couple of real ales behind the bar, all in all quite nice.
