Real Ale Ray left this review about Alberts Schenke

Updated review Feb 23

I think curiosity brought us in here, as it was so busy on a Thursday eve. I was most probably wishing to hear an oompah band playing or at least some German music. Unfortunately they had two acoustic guitarists winching down a microphone. Beer wise no cask, however there was a decent range of 8 craft beers , so we went for the Glen Affric "Bevvie Across the Mersey" session IPA, which was £6 a pint. Their other beers were around £7. Lots of Paulaner Munich beer flags across the ceilings and a fire pit over on the left of entrance.

Original review 2013

There were two ales on handpump on this visit. I went for the Burscough Brewery Old Habit. Managed to a get a seat over on the left-hand side of the entrance, as you're out of the hustle and bustle from the main part of the restaurant.

I still struggle what to make of this place. It's a German-themed bar/restaurant with slightly more emphasis on restaurant than bar and enjoys a decent corner location near the Liverpool One shopping centre and bus station.

The two handpulls are no longer used, but there is a good selection of craft ales - Magic Rock Saucery, Twisted Wheel Speed Wobble, Farmyard A Rose Between & Kolsch, Kirkstall Lady Grey, Black Lodge Stars Above, Abbeydale Outback & Alpha Delta Hera.

Prices are also quite steep here. I asked for 3 halves, only to discover that only one of the beers I'd ordered could be served in a half pint measure (?), meaning I had to order either a third or two thirds. The bill came to £14+!

There's always some interesting craft beers here, but the prices and the focus on dining deter me from visiting too often. You certainly wouldn't want a session here, unless you had ridiculous amounts of cash to waste.

Brainy Pool left this review about Alberts Schenke

This is not a bad place at all, it’s decorated as a Bavarian bierhalle and feels reasonably well done and not too ersatz, it also has a good atmosphere with plenty of drinkers in along with the diners. Food is good quality, hearty, large portions. It’s worth a visit but the handpulls appear to have disappeared and I have to say I was hoping for a better range of German beers, I thought the choice was quite run of the mill.

This is now passing itself off as a 'German Bier Haus'. As to how authentic it is I've no idea. It is, however, a nice enough bright and airy place let down severely by the prices. A large L-shaped interior with lots of wood (bar, seating, tables). 4 handpulls for real ale with beers from Black Lodge, Se7en Brothers, Wild Beer and Liverpool Craft (prices from £4 - £5+). There are 12 taps for crafty nonsense and 2 for Guinness plus a number of Germanish lager pumps.

Call in here for a beer on a fairly regular basis now. Despite the pretentions the beer is always in good nick. Mobberley Brewhouse Taking The Pith on this occasion.

This bar has made it into the CAMRA GBG2013. Only 2 beers on the bar though when we called in twice over two days recently. Both beers were from Liverpool Organic and both were in good condition to be fair.

Fairly new addition to the cask ale scene in Liverpool. This is a modern, large, one roomer with a raised area to the left and another area to the right both set up for dining. In the middle are a couple of high tables with stools along with some bar stools for drinkers. We first called in here on a weekday afternoon and the other half loved it, so we came back that evening. In the evening it was very busy & buzzy and the great range of ale from Liverpool Craft & Liverpool Organic amongst others from Lancaster brewery meant that I was pretty happy as well. We came back the following evening for something to eat. This was a mistake. Pretentious, over priced, average quality food I'm afraid. How can you have a steak & ale pie on a board with peas in a little dish and no gravy? Very poor value and so far up their own arse that it probably hurts. We'll be back for the beer and the atmosphere, but will never eat here again.

A psuedo-upmarket place. Expensive and full of some of the most pretentious tits in existence. Real ale is available but don't bother.

Old Boots left this review about The Hub Alehouse & Kitchen

A restaurant with five pulls usually with beer from the Liverpool One brewery with two or three guests. Modern sort of exposed bricks and metal conduits decor. A mainly middle class or aspiring clientele and I found it deeply unpleasant as I'm not in the target demographic. Not hugely welcoming to casual drinkers and for me basically a waste of time. Beer quality not up to much either and somehow it's in the GBG 2014.

Looking for somewhere to grab a bite for lunch, I noticed this place, which I’d coincidentally recently read an article about which recommended it for good food and local beers. The branding which promotes the place as an ale house and kitchen is a little misleading, as to my mind this was more of a conventional restaurant than somewhere you’d go to enjoy a few drinks. On entering I was greeted by a waitress who led me to a table far away from the bar because I’d specified that I wanted to eat. The interior is just one large open plan room with pine flooring, bare brick walls and lots of those exposed pipes and ducts running along the ceiling that you seem to get in this sort of establishment. Almost the whole room was set up for formal dining, meaning there were lots of standard table and chair arrangements, although there were a few high tables and stools and the odd sofa here and there. Blackboards dominated the decor, with lists of food and drinks everywhere you looked, whilst I also noticed a couple of display cabinets full of various bottles.
The beer list was actually quite good with five ales available – Liverpool Organic 24 Carat (£2.95), Lancaster Blonde and Amber, Northern Best Bitter and Salamander Golden Salamander – although I thought the 24 Carat was too warm to properly enjoy. My sandwich was nice enough, although why they serve it with a pile of crisps I’ll never know. The waitress who served me was very polite and prompt but I did feel a bit like I was being watched because there were only a couple of other customers in.
Maybe this place works better in the evening when there’s a good crowd in, but it all felt a little too clinical and formal for my liking. Bonus points for the good beer selection though.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about The Hub Alehouse & Kitchen

You will get a good idea of what's inside from the 'Alehouse & Kitchen' part of the name. Housed in the re-built Casartelli Building, it has a bright modern interior, part raised by a single step. Mostly set out for dining, and even the other tables have table service. However, for the real ale drinker, ordering at the bar is the best bet as there is a good choice of local and regional beers from the five handpumps (e.g. Higsons Best Bitter at £2.95). (NB - Review dates from September 2011.)
