This large Edwardian house presents a surprise, sitting as it does somewhat incongruously in a well kept village in secluded countryside. The whole pub and its grounds (it certainly doesn't lack land) are immaculately kept, and even the gravel in the carpark is nicely bordered and flat. The ivy on the brick walls lends gravitas to the structure. The garden is behind the car park and is raised several feet. Inside, the single large bar is set out like an expensive restaurant, the tables all laid for multi-course meals. It appears there might also be a function room, but we didn't see it. At the front is a neat stone terrace with chairs, tables and umbrellas, plus a large patio heater. There is a smart array of wine available as well as three real ales. I had a pint of Butcombe's Haka which was in first class condition. Staff were friendly and professional, while the locals were very chatty and convivial. The only real downside is the prices, which are around 20% higher than the average for the area. This pub is a long way off the beaten track, but it's well worth seeking out for a meal or a casual pint.
