A friendly little shop conversion with walls liberally covered with photos and other memorabilia. The tables were a bit regimented in rows, presumably as a Covid measure, but the general feeling is still good. Down a couple of flights of steps at the back is a little outdoor area. The bar offered Butcombe and Ghost Ship, once you had squeezed past the aged locals, while the equally venerable landlord is seeking retirement so the place is up for sale. Hopefully someone will take it on as it is a very nice drinking establishment.

Café/pub mash-up that works well, mainly due to the huge amount of UK-related bric a brac ‘Best of British’ - Union Jacks, framed pics of celebs (Cliff etc). And of course the beer; two pumps with Bass and Longman APA plus a tub of West Country Amber Gold. Went for the Longman and was gratified to see a little bit poured off before being presented with a superb pint, possibly the best one I had all holiday. Also noted 14 different bottled beers and three ciders/perries. It’s very Isle of Wight in here (those who know the Isle will understand what I mean) and I rather enjoyed it. The laminated sign at the bar about bad language made me smile. 7.5

Formerly an off licence, this shop frontage bar describes itself as a lounge and wine bar, which is accurate enough. The large picture windows means you are very much on show if eating or drinking inside, and the place opens at 9am for breakfast/coffee/etc and is well used. The small round tables quickly get occupied and chatter reverberates around the high ceiling interior,it gets quite noisy.Very much a locals hangout, the owner has run many pubs in Ventnor over the last 25 years and has a firm fan club.
I went in on the strength of the GBG 2014 listing ,but was disappointed to find only Doom Bar and Wadsworth 6X on the two handpumps.Nothing wrong with quality, just two dull ales. The food may well be good, but there wasn't that much here for the beer drinker.
