Visited back in May, on a Saturday night. Two Pomona Island beers available on cask - Do-You-Think-He-Saurus (4.3% bitter) and Tattarrattat (4.3% hazy pale ale). The bitter was all you would expect from a bitter - malty, sweet, full bodied and safe. The Tattarrattat was disappointing - best described as a piney watered down cordial. People rave about Pomona Island but it is fair to say their best stuff was not being showcased on cask here at the time of my visit.

I always used to get confused between the Gas Lamp on one side of Bridge Street and Brink on the other side. Brink was my favourite of the two and they are/were both cellar bars. I say "were", as Brink has now closed down.

The Gas Lamp had a bouncer on the door on our late Friday night visit. Two real ales were on - Torrside Candlewick & Pomona Island Hello Girault. Craft beers easily outnumber the cask - Pomona Island Blume, Clarky Cat, The Best of All Possible Worlds, Factotum & Dress Sexy At My Funeral, Liquid Light White Rabbit & Freak Out, Squawk Suli, Triple Point Bluesy & First Chop Pod. Both the cask beers and the various craft beers I tried were all in good condition.

The interior is dominated by the white tiling, which gives it a fairly cold feel. There is a main bar area, with further seating another room at the rear, also tiled.

Staff seemed a bit sullen, but our visit here was still a decent place to finish the night. I will upgrade my score to a 6/10, which may still be a bit conservative.

The Gas Lamp is a cellar bar with white tiled walls akin to that of an underground station or public toilet. The small rectangular bar area houses a serving counter on the right wall and tables that were half full of people chatting and listening to the background music during my recent Tuesday evening visit. The décor is minimal with a few old photos and beer signs on the walls. In the left rear is the ‘Back Parlour’ that is a thin strip with a beer shelf and stools, felt a bit like a urinal to me.
Pomona Island’s Cruffatin was available on cask. Three hand pumps stood unused, although Twisted Wheel’s Come + go was also up on the board, so it had either just come off or was about to go on. Craft keg is also available. I found the service to be very friendly and the Cruffatin was very good, but the surroundings weren’t for me so I wouldn't go out of my way to return.

Re-visited on Saturday evening. Four hand pulls for cask ale but only one was available, another had the clip turned round and the other two were completely unclipped. A few keg options of interest to compensate. Still a good place and we'd obviously caught them after one of the cask ales had sold out.

Underground bar that's easy to miss, the exterior signage is minimal. Down a flight of steps to an interesting cream (or just discoloured white?) glazed tiled room that smells of damp. Three cask alongside a large list of craft (menus on tables). My Pomona Mild was another flat and over-vented Manc beer (NBSS 2) that may well have had an aspirator on it. Interesting venue but the ropey cask put me off a second, which is a shame, as it's an interesting pub. GBG ’22 listed. 6.5

subterranean bar full of character and atmosphere - love the glazed brick walls. I spotted two rooms but settled in the main bar. Plenty of handpumps, interesting beers, not much for the standard keg drinker and it is rather expensive. But well worth a visit for something different.

Head down the steps and wait to be seated. You are shown to a table and given a slip of paper to register your contact details. Wi-Fi is available and the code is provided at the tables along with a QR code to scan to take you to the beer menu. However from our position we could see the hand pulls and the chalk beer board. No service at the bar, table service only. Two of four hand pulls were on, offering RedWillow Effortless and Pomona Island Session IPA as of yesterday afternoon. Not mega busy as you'd expect for a Tuesday afternoon, but a few customers in. Glad to see this place has been able to reopen, and I will be happy to pay another visit at some point.

Good Beer Guide 2019 entry.

Easy to miss, as its a subterranean cellar bar housed in a building that used to be a children's mission.

Once down the steep steps, it opens into nicely tilde wide spaces with woodend tables.

Bit disappointed with my visit. Two out of the three hand pulls in operation but mainly, its catering for very expensive bottled beers. One of the hand pulls was a port from Ilkley brewery - which was in good condition.

The tables were filthy - a combination of no beer mats and staff not clearing up the debris from the last occupants (who admittedly should be returning their glassware).

I’m all for former Victorian buildings of a different use finding new life as a pub or bar and in this case the basement of the former Manchester & Salford's Children mission building now lives on as a craft and cask bar. Well described by others it’s an interesting cellar bar to drink in with its Victorian glazed brick walls with little additional decoration.
In fact, the only issue I had with it was the internal layout for the bar area with the sparse bar with its craft keg wall and four ale hand pumps tucked away against the far front wall meaning that you have to queue through the tables during busy times, as we did.
On the ale front there is a good focus on smaller independent breweries from outside the Manchester area and my half of Beatnikz Republic Leather Soul was on fine form.

After a busy Friday night visit, I returned the following day just after opening time and being the first customer of the day I was better able to appreciate my surroundings than I did the evening before, the fact I was sober this time round also helped greatly. As described below this is a cellar bar clad in white tiles throughout, that are slightly yellowing due to the passage of time.A corridor leads through to more seating in a room to the rear, there are framed black and white pictures on the walls, many relating to the buildings past as a children's mission building. The lighting is of medium level, no doubt the tiling prevents it being gloomy which is a bonus. There are four ale handpumps and ten craft keg taps, my pint of cask Pamona Pale was in good shape and refreshing. The bar began to fill up slowly during my half hour second stay but this place is quite atmospheric empty or full. A brilliant bar.
