Feels like this one has had a makeover since I was last here. It’s still upmarket in aspiration; large, light and brightly-lit, though there are plenty of punters who probably wouldn’t fit the preferred demographic. GBG listed which causes the odd moo and grunt though my choice of St Austell Proper Job was par (NBSS 3) and better than 50% of the cask I had up the hill that day.

Grade II listed building with ivy clad frontage. Big inside, with a number of different comfy seating areas and a fairly modern feel. Nice rear garden. Six pumps with five ales got me excited: OSH, Waddies 6X, Ringwood 49er, Doom Bar and Prescott Chequered Flag. Sadly my Prescott was cloudy and unimpressive. Old Rosie also on. With a bit of attention at the bar, this could be worthwhile. Rated 6

Probably the worst Good Beer Guide Pub I have been to.

On beer quality, there was nothing wrong with my proper job - so I suppose the guide is doing what it says on the tin.

Brightly lit gastro pubs, i can cope with but not when they have a pre-recorded, piped in pub quiz. Complete with annoying timer after each question, jingles and a dreadful host.

If you went out your way to create a worse atmosphere, I am not sure you would succeed.

Attractive-looking, ivy-clad building in Swindon's Old Town.

We were greeted by a guy with an iPad, who asked us if we'd booked. After much consideration, he decided that he might be able to fit us in. The spacious interior was in fact very empty, with only one other couple present. An outdoor area at the rear was much busier.

A glance at the bar initially looked quite promising. The 3 regular real ales are Ringwood Forty Niner, Sharp's Doom Bar & St Austell Tribute. A further 3 handpulls were clipped with St Austell Proper Job, Prescott Hill Climb & Lilley's Mango Cider. However, it turned out that the most adventurous of the ales (Hill Climb) was actually off, meaning it was Mango Ciders all round at this stage of our crawl!

TVs were showing the Euros football tournament, until the match was suspended following the Christian Eriksen collapse, when gardening came on instead.

Certainly a nice building inside and out, but a little too pretentious for my liking. A plus point for real cider though.
