I have visited several times since my first review in March and every time the beer has been absolutely top class. The upstairs room is a fine comfortable place for a chat or you can stand (or sit if you're lucky) in the buzzy downstairs bar. An excellent first year and all strength to their elbow.

Recently opened venture from the same company who own Common on nearby Edge Street. The downstairs area has a few leather settles, a couple of high drinking tables and a number of stools. The upstairs room is more spacious as there's no bar up there and has more comfy chairs and tables. The toilets are on the top floor which is a bit of a hike, although there is a disabled toilet on the ground floor. There's an outdoor area at the rear with 4 picnic benches. Very modern feel with wooden floors and artwork on the wall which is all for sale. 5 handpumps offering Boggart Dark Mild, Prospect Hop Vine, Thornbridge Lord Marples, Hardknott Interstellar Matter & Leadmill Niagra on Saturday. The Hop Vine & Leadmill were excellent. I personally didn't like the Hardknott much but they were all kept well. They also have some unusual kegs from BrewDog along with Erdinger etc. You don't have to have a beard to work here, but it certainly seems to help. All 3 of the fairly young male staff had them. It's not a traditional beer house really and wouldn't appeal to everyone, but don't let that put you off. We'll certainly be coming back here.

First time visit to this beer house, and it was very busy when we arrived about 6ish on Saturday night. Bar area was busy but service prompt, and the beer quality of the Magic Rock ale chosen was good. Unable to describe the place very well as it was my last port of call before heading for the train after a very enjoyable few days in Manchester, but it is one I would like to visit again when next in the area.

I would say that this is very modern bar, judging by my traditionalist standards. I failed to make a note of the ale I had in here, and my powers of recall had been in decline for some hours by the time I got dragged in here by a distinguished fellow PuG reviewer. But I seem to recall that I enjoyed it, and I do recall that I enjoyed my visit to this bar. The downstairs (ground floor) bar area was fairly crowded but there is more seating upstairs in what I think is a more comfortable room, and with the pastel painted walls that you often see in these modern looking places. There is no bar counter upstairs so of course drinks have to be brought up from downstairs.
I have to say that I do prefer the more traditional pubs, but I heartily approve of these sort of places doing real ale and thus hopefully exposing the hitherto less discerning drinker to its delights. If you appreciate the combination of modern comforts and real ale, then this is the place for you.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about Port Street Beer House

You won't spot this one from any distance; and even when you do, you will find out what looks like the front door no longer serves that purpose. Instead, you need to use the side entrance (which presumably originally lead to a separate business or residence upstairs). Anyway, the little ground floor bar has been given a part-traditional look with basic wooden furniture but more modern decor. The upstairs lounge is more comfortable (but has no bar). Small patio out back. Seven rare ales on handpump, with the seasonal Jocktoberfest from the Kelso-based micro Tempest Brewing (£3.60) being outstanding. Also has a range of interesting keg beers and lagers, plus a substantial range of bottled offerings. Overall, well worth making a journey out to this untouristy spot on the eastern edge of the city centre.

I nearly missed this one it has such a discreet frontage, refined and sophisticated I suppose, in contrast to the bar right next door in an area of demolition and stalled redevelopment. A single square room on the ground floor with a low counter to the side serving a good mix of small UK brewery cask beers, continental kegs, Brewdog keg and a good selection of bottles. They were running a Scottish themed mini festival named Jocktober this week. The glassware is branded with the bar's logo. The staff were enthusiastic and knowledgeable young ladies without beards (Rob must have picked a bad day). There is a stripy laminate floor, plain walls in “taupe” and seating mainly on metal stools although there is a rather pubby settle in one corner, décor is of the line of pump clips on a beam variety. The music is constant and at low level so it's almost drowned out by the happy chatter of the customers. Much trendy eyewear and even trendier haircuts in evidence among the mainly younger clientele, along with some older eccentrics, the odd beer geek and some young women in for post work/pre weekend drinks. As Rob says there's beer yard at the back, a lounge on the first floor and the toilets on the second floor. It's not a pub but it's popular and sells a good range and quality of beer.
