A purpose-built 19th century hotel with a Walkers Bar to the left having its own entrance. This feels like a bit of an afterthought, though it is pleasant enough, with off-white painted walls and wood panelling, wooden furnishings and floorboards. A wood-burning stove has a couple of pews next to it, but otherwise it's chunky tables to encourage diners to eat and move on. The price of the beer would have had me moving on anyway - £2.80 for a half of the same beer I'd had at the Sticklebarn for only £2.25 - and it wasn't so well kept here either.

it's totally different to the other two in Langdale, modern and characterless. the ale was expensive (over £4) and mediocre and barman unfriendly. so not a great experience really.

The NDG was our board for the night. Nice hotel, good service and excellent food/breakfast.
For drinkers, there is a hikers bar that's unpretentious . Two real ales were on - Wainwright and a never seen before and little information found on the web Hardy Tup. It does appear as though I have been accidentally been drinking mild again.
Great location and good beer.

The Walkers Bar has three hand pumps, of which two were in service during my recent visit. One was Thwaites Wainwright and the other was badged as Hardy Tup, with no brewer's name on it. It had the same strength as, and tasted like, Thwaites Original. The single room in which the bar stands is very basic, with chunky pine tables and outsize high backed wooden chairs, and a floor made of some sort of plastic aggregate, giving the ambience of an institutional dining room. Outside there are similarly regimented bench tables on a slate terrace, which is pleasant enough when the weather allows. This place is geared towards eating, and I can't imagine wanting to hang around after dining for another pint or two. Just a few paces away is the Sticklebarn, which at least makes some sort of effort towards creating a pub atmosphere.
