Brainy Pool left this review about Lower Turks Head / Scuttlers

this pub was open and pretty busy on a Sunday morning. I must say I really liked the room I was in, a beautifully done up traditional place. 3 of the handpumps were on with Landlord, a Wychwood Christmas beer and their own branded ‘Turkish Delight’ which was a delicious 6%er. I don’t know where it’s brewed and didn’t ask but it really was very nice.

A long extended room with the bar down one side, decorated in a traditional manner, wood flooring and some paneling on the walls, mixed seating including the odd raised benches mentioned in RobCamra's review. six pumps, I didn't note all the beers but I had a nice Kettle Head Chocolate Stout, the barman/landlord made a point of pulling a good pint and a half through the lines before serving me my pint. I also noticed a Black IPA on amongst the more mainstream styles.
A pleasant enough pub.

Have been a couple of times preior to my most recent visit and have found the real ale selection to be a bit on the safe side. On my most recent visit I noticed they had Turkish Delight, branded as being by Lower Turks Head, but later discovered was brewed by Manchester Brewing especially for the pub. This is a 6% bitter so on the strong side, but sadly there were no clues on the pump clip as to the style of beer we were buying so was a bit of a gamble. I was half expecting a funky IPA that tasted or Turkish Delight. It wasn't a bad bitter. Can't remember what else was on at the time. Very handy for Shudehill station.

Mr Camra has described it below. All 6 pumps were on today with a good mix of styles to choose from.

Settling in nicely and very busy last night as they had a pretty good acoustic guitarist on. Still a pedestrian selection of ale, but my Pendle Witch was in good nick.

Nicely renovated old pub that has been closed for years, it's nice to see it open again. According to the signage the left hand side of the building is the Lower Turks Head and the right hand side is Scuttlers Wine Bar. It reality they're both the same place and are joined together internally and you can walk from one side to the other. At the moment you can only use the entrance to the left anyway. Scuttlers has unusual seating along the side which are effectively high chairs with separators. There are also a few dining tables and chairs at the front. The Turks side has 2 small rooms to the left and leather sofas. The toilets are in this half of the bar. There's another room upstairs along with a garden terrace. There are 6 handpumps all in the Turks side. On my visit only 4 were on and they were pulling the less than interesting selection of Lees Bitter & The Governer, Robinsons Trooper and St Austell Tribute. One of the other pumps had a reversed Hobgoblin clip on it. So don't expect to get any micro brewery beers here. The Trooper was in decent condition though. It's a very nicely done bar and someone has spent a lot of money here, but there's also a lot of competition in the immediate area. The pedestrian beer selection means that it won't be on my list for a regular visit I'm afraid.
