A fabulous looking pub this one, especially in the evening when lit up. Can't be missed out if you're on a real ale tour, eight on offer. Very friendly place, I went for the Beowolf Dragon Smoke, Dancing Duck Nice Weather For Ducks, also had Sarah Hughes on stillage.

called in on Saturday afternoon. Rather quiet but a nice relaxed atmosphere. Great range of real ales and pleasant surroundings.

Popular with folk doing the town centre circuit, but not to the extent of needing doormen there is a fine selection of handpumped ales as mentioned by Mr Phat. The two beers from barrels on stillage in The John Lombe bar were in poor condition, but I would pop in again and try a selection of their handpumped ales.Lively yet friendly, there were few original features to the interior that I could spot, but this was the last stop on a heavy tour so I may have missed a lot.

Thuck Phat left this review about The Old Silk Mill

Very busy on our Saturday evening visit, the Old Silk Mill is very close to the Market Square and is clearly a popular stop on the town centre 'circuit'.
There were 8 handpumps on at the main bar, 2 for cider and 6 for ale which included Oakham Bishops Farewell, Wentworth WPA and Blue Monkey BG Sips. There were also 2 available from the rack of barrels in the John Lombe bar at the back, Thornbridge Jaipur and Kipling. This was where we headed which probably wasn't smart, the beer wasn't great and lacked life. Unfortunately we were pretty full by then and none of the handpulled beers tempted so a revisit is probably required.
Worth dropping in for one on any Derby crawl.

An attractive building (with a massive mural on one of the side walls) that gives way to a newly-decorated interior. This is a fairly basic, knocked-through affair that is in good decorative order, with a nice dark wooden bar. A wide variety of ale was available from some excellent smaller breweries (from the likes of Blue Monkey, Purity, York, Oakham and, er, Sharps Doom Bar plus Bass from a jug) and two ciders (Westons and the not-so-real Addlestones) though choices were swiftly whittled down to five after three went off during the first round. All those I tried were in excellent shape, best-kept of the day for my money. I did note there were some barrels racked up elsewhere though these were not drawing. Staff were very friendly and knew their stuff. Food was not available though apparently you are welcome to bring in your own and they’ll provide crockery and cutlery. Unusually for this sort of pub, reggae was the background music of choice. Perhaps lacking a bit of character but it’s a good bet if you’re an ale fan.

Reopened and refurbished last year to good effect. It's just across the road from Ye Olde Dolphin. There’s a huge mural on the outside which is difficult to miss. It has a fine old stone exterior along with some black and white timberwork. Once inside there are two rooms both with good fireplaces and nicely decorated with red settles and old photos of the pub around the walls. There’s a decent bit of tiling to the rear near the toilets and the room to the right of the door has parquet flooring. There are 8 handpumps, all being used when we visited, plus Bass served from the jug. The John Loombe bar is now open at the back of the pub which had 4 more beers stillaged behind it. I had a pint of Hip Hop from the Blackwater brewery which was very good. They don’t do food but they will let you bring your own in and will also supply plates and cutlery. Add it to your ale trail in Derby.

Soup Dragon left this review about The Old Silk Mill

This detached brick build has a mock Tudor facade, the lower half in stone and the upper in timber, that hide its much later origins. There is a coloured mural on the side.

The interior has two rooms (Offilers Lounge) and the bar, and is in white and wood panel, with marble fireplace. Whilst the walls are a little bare, there are still a number of old photographs of the pub and Derby, as well as some prints. There is a lot of tiling in the corridors and there is a central wood bar, with good service, though it was quiet when we visited. Music was easy listening and at a decent level.

Beer; tap stuff, with 8 handpulls. The Brentwood Hope & Glory was excellent, the Cairngorm Stout fine.

Yet another joy to visit. A great pub.

Old Boots left this review about The Old Silk Mill

Prominently sited pub, with a mixed modern, 1930s and older interior. Eight handpumps serving well kept beers from microbreweries countrywide, plus the usual suspects in the keg line. Comfortable interior with a main room containing the bar counter, a smaller snug like room to one end called the Offilers Lounge and a function room towards the rear. There are some nice 1930s tiles in a service corridor running behind the bar, tiled floors and a pretty victorian fireplace. Quiet on my visit with a few older gents in the Offilers. Offilers is the name of a defunct Derby brewery which closed in 1966 but I don't know if this was one of their tied houses.
