About a five minute walk from the railway station, the Drum & Monkey is tucked out of the way down a dead end back road. I had a map and was specifically looking for this pub, but I still would have walked past if a sign hadn’t prompted me to change my direction of travel.
The bar counter runs up the right-hand wall facing seating up the left. In the front left is a cosy snug with an old worn tiled floor, seating and a burner. This was the most interesting part of the pub so was where I decided to sup my pint. At the rear is a dining area with stuffy red seats and upstairs is a function room that is available for hire. Out the back is a bowling green that had some picnic tables on it, which I don’t think is normal for a bowling green.
This is s Robinson’s pub so three out of the four hand pumps in operation were drawing Unicorn, Dizzy Blonde and Trooper. Premium keg was also available. I was the only customer during my recent Monday evening visit so there was no atmosphere, which is pretty standard for a Monday. The background music didn’t really help as it flitted from The Smiths to folksy music before reaching some niche noise. Maybe things are better on a weekend when live music is being hosted, or maybe on Thursdays for the weekly quiz. This pub’s location means that I’ll probably never return, however if I did find myself in the area again at a busier time I’d give it another try.

Small and clean traditional watering hole with a friendly and helpful crew that is tucked away about 15 mins walk from the town centre, and is not the easiest place to find but is well signposted from Heyes Lane. You enter the pub through a type of porch with the bar to your right and a small room around the corner to the left. The interior has a moderately wooded influence to it,with the beer Robinsons and the usual suspects on display, but perhaps one of the better features of the pub is the outside patio area that offers a pleasant vista overlooking the splendid bowling green.
Worth seeking out.
