This is now The Belmill Hotel, under which name I have reviewed it separately.

I attended one of the occasional folk music nights in the Platform Three Club Suite here recently. Normally the venue for the town’s only disco, it has been expanded, refurbished and greatly improved since I was last in it. The prices are higher than the bar next door, although my pint of Guinness, costing £3, had to be brought through from there, as there are only Tennent’s lager and Magner’s cider taps in the Club Suite. The refurbishment has created a very comfortable and pleasant environment, quite different to the rather basic public bar.

Now under new management, by the same people who own The Athletic Vaults, Chaplin’s has just undergone a major refurbishment. The insertion of new windows in the front exterior wall has given it a much more attractive appearance from the street and the bar has been freshened up, although it remains substantially the same as before. The disco, in the cottage style building at the side, has been renamed the Platform 3 Club Suite (with reference to the adjacent two platform railway station) and has also been revamped. It will now open on Thursdays and Sundays, in addition to the previous Fridays and Saturdays, and promises live bands on some nights and resident DJs on others. It is also available for hire as a private function suite. Beers on tap are limited to Tennents Lager, Caledonia Best and Guinness, in addition to Magner’s Golden Draught Cider. Prices remain inexpensive at £2.45 for a pint of Caledonia Best.

A sizeable establishment next to Bellshill railway station, known in the distant past as “The Railway Inn.” The public bar at the front leads through to “Sarah’s Lounge” at the rear, although there is no partition and service is from the same bar. Prices are low and these areas tend to be dominated by a middle aged and older clientele. A back door from the lounge leads outside to an extensive beer garden with a substantial smoking shelter. The cottage-like building to the right of the photograph is also part of the hotel and contains the town’s only disco. This can be very busy at weekends, when it stays open until 2.00 or 3.00 a.m. The upstairs hotel accommodation is minimal and seems to cater more for workmen than tourists or travellers.
