Large interior and 'spoons like without the keen pricing, souless and largely empty ,the sight of a singe handpump offering Doom Bar was enough to beat a quick retreat. You can do better in Gainsborough ...just.

Is a bar? Is it a pub? No it’s a spoons a like! Yep one of those places where only the absence of a unique carpet and other subtle clues tell you this isn’t a real spoons. Silent big screens with sub titles, split level, fruit machines, mix of seating tick, tick, tick, tick, but what’s this only 4 pulls among the dross! And no drinks machines or local interest photos, hello there’s a pool table and what’s more a choice of lovely Doombar or Bombardier, to be fair there was a choice of old or new Bombardier pump clips, either way a very disgusting liquid. Slightly more upmarket lunchtime punters than the nearby spoons. I suspect a return visit is not on the cards.

CAMRA pub of the season yet again. 5 real ales, 2 house and 3 guests. Usually all in really good nick. Well worth a visit.

This is the first Smith & Jones pub I've been to and Mr Later, below, is spot on when he refers to it as a high street drinking barn.
Two things stuck out from the norm, firstly that they do have Sky Sports and do show live games on the myriad screens around the place. Unlike 'Spoons with their relentless Sky Sports News. Secondly, there's a fair selection of ale offered.
On our visit the beer choice was Ossett Citra, which was good, Pedigree Diamond, Ringwood Boondoggle, Morland Original, Bombardier and Olde Trip. Unsurprisingly dominated by the nationals but saved by the Citra.
You know what you're getting here and if you're lucky it may include a decent pint of something interesting.

Just around the corner from the Eight Jolly brewers, this Smith & Jones pub is also just a few doors along from the Wetherspoons on Silver Street, part of the pedestrian precinct near Gainsborough's market square. There were six beers on hand pump when we visited on a Monday afternoon in September, mostly from local breweries. It's good to see this chain pub making an effort to compete, though when all's said and done it's not really a proper pub - more a drinking barn like the other high street chains.
