Well described by others, below, this friendly Victorian town local was a nice surprise, given the setting opposite the run-down cinema which looks like it’s due for demolition. It’s a friendly pub with 2 pool tables, 2 dartboards and live sports being shown on TV screens. They boast a good collection of sports trophies. There is also a large screen and projector, but these weren’t in use when we visited. The tiny back yard is mainly used by smokers. The wooden beams which have replaced supporting walls are functional, rather than decorative, and there is an iron woodburner supplying plenty of heat. The landlady and locals alike welcomed us and were good company. They host occasional live music. Only one ale on, Slater’s Premium, which was in excellent condition. I’d be very happy to come back especially if tied in with a visit to other good pubs nearby, though dogs aren’t allowed in so it would have to be unaccompanied.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about The Hop Pole

Quite an attractive end-of-terrace pub, partly opened-up to leave an elongated main bar with one pool table at the front, the main part of the counter in the middle and another pool table to the rear. Also has a side room at the front with another part of the bar counter. Fairly plainly furnished, but brightly lit and featuring a range of pictures, sports trophies, etc. Three of five handpumps in use, with Sharp's Atlantic, Robinson's Blonde (£2.80) and Old Rosie cider on offer.

An end terrace house styled pub, in cream render and green.

The interior had one open plan room, but two areas - i assume they were separate rooms now knocked into one. The decor is cream and wood panel, with a white ceiling and blue covered seats. In the one area there is a pool table and dart board. There were sporting pictures on the walls, mainly boxing and the music came the radio, at a decent level, the TV wasn't on. The service was fine, i was the only clientele.

Beer; all tap stuff, no real ale, no MILD on keg. I had Strongbow.

A 'Carling' pub, very basic in what it serves and unless you seek the basic drinks you wouldn't seek it out. It is inoffensive, if you do.
