Originally called the White House, this was an ale house built in 1689 and the much larger 19th century hotel either grew up around it or gradually replaced it. The publike part is now to the right hand side of the main building, with smaller rooms off the low ceilinged bar, and with its beams and small windows perhaps indicating its age; there is access to the hotel dining room to the left on entering. There were five hand pumps on the bar at the time of my visit, with four cask beers on; five ciders were listed on an adjacent blackboard. I went for Cross Bay Halo EPA 3.6%, which at the time I assessed as NBSS 3.0, but having since drunk this beer in much better condition elsewhere I'm inclined to think it was probably just 2.5 here; I also had a half of the house beer, White House 1869 (NBSS 3.5), which I assume is brewed by Marstons, as their glasses are used here. Worth a visit for its historical interest, its location and (in reasonable weather) the garden and the view.

After a drive across the Kirkstone Pass, you have to take a turning to the right towards Ambleside to locate the Mortal Man, which is above the main road through the village, where the Queen's Head can be found.

The main bar was busy with all tables taken. I think that a number of people were still left over from the lunchtime rush.

Just 2 real ales were on - Bowness Bay Fell Walker & Cumbrian Ales Loweswater Gold. I was instead drawn to the real cider selection - Weston's Old Rosie & Rosie's Pig, Lilley's Wild Dog & SeaCider Passion Fruit. The pub is a regular winner of the CAMRA local cider pub of the year award.

Nice, homely pub that is also a relatively short drive from Ambleside up some narrow lanes.

Slightly peculiar small hotel tucked away at end of hillside village. One bar, with adjacent dining room. usual selection of local beers and food available. Perhaps it was the time of day, but it didn't feel quite right. Possibly needs further investigation.
