An attractive and imposing stone built downland pub, probably originally a private house set among the salad fields to the south of Petworth. On a rare sunny and warm day this summer, we sat under a vine trellis in the large garden and enjoyed a well presented lunch. Mainly, I would suggest, a dining pub,it was well patronised by groups of families and business people meeting for al fresco negotiations.
In the little bar, which reassuringly had signs of pub life such as darts and notices of sporting interest, I was intrigued to see a couple of firkins racked up on a stillage:Skinner’s ‘Betty Stogs’. I was rather concerned that the beer would be off or warm, especially as the pretty barmaid had difficulty operating the tap, but in fact the beer was on excellent form.
Unusually the pub seems to have only one (unisex) lavatory, which caused some element of delay on our onward journey to the coast. That apart, a pleasant and worthwhile visit.
