Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about The Butter Cross (JD Wetherspoon)

Housed in a bold 1960s building previously known as The Crown, which was itself built on the site of two earlier, smaller pubs. The interior is lighter than I expected, feeling during my late morning visit more like a café / bar, and thus slightly different to most 'spoons. It was also good to see all six handpumps in use, offering GK Ruby Abbot (a new one on me), Newby Wyke Bear Island and a 'house' beer from Nottingham Brewery (£2.15).

The Butter Cross looks out over Bingham's market square and the landmark it is named after.

It is a fairly modern branch of Wetherspoon's. Unlike others I have been in of late, table service was prompt and friendly, with no problems experienced when attempting to order using CAMRA vouchers.

The usual Wetherspoon's ales of Greene King Abbot, Ruddles Best & Sharp's Doom Bar were on in addition to a guest ale, which was Brain's The Rev James. The 2 real ciders were Black Dragon & Old Rosie.

We ordered a breakfast, which was also quick to be served.

Typical JDW in a busy market square where we enjoyed the breakfast but a poor beer choice for JDW and the house beer Butter Cross from Nottingham brewery was very weak and tasteless.

A very pleasant Thursday afternoon visit, hence two curries and two pints for £14 and then a bit of time for a sit in the rear courtyard in the sun. The interior in here was modern in décor with the main bar and front lounge areas hosting some white and dark grey crackle glazed timberwork. Another feature was the tubular scaffold type poles used across the front bar as a pot shelf and as a feature between the front and rear lounge. The bar counter was in stainless steel and there was a flagstone floor in the front of the bar area. We went for the Nottingham Brewery house beer, Butter Cross. This is a respectable Spoons and well worth a visit, even though the beer choice was slightly lacking in choice on this visit.

I was surprised to learn that this was originally a pub as I thought when approaching it looked like a former public library or some other local government building. Inside it's a long open plan room with the bar on the immediate right then small rooms for eating either side before reaching the rear area that overlooks an enclosed paved patio with some further tables and chairs across a pathway.
The bar has ten hand pumps which had two unused, Doom Bore, GK Abbot, a house Nottingham Butter Cross doubled up, one available soon, Adnam's Ghost Ship, a cider and Lincoln Green Hood. They also had a few festival ciders still on but I went for the Gwynt Y Ddraig Black Dragon one (£2.85).
I thought this was quite a decent Spoons but let down by an average beer choice.

I first visited this pub when it was called the Crown Inn.
This was a rough and ready drinkers pub that was a Bass tied house,i have been in this pub on a few occasions under this name, things have changed quite a lot since my last visit here.

The Butter Cross is a newly opened Spoons which is on Binghams market place.
Once inside there was a smallish bar by Spoons standards to the front right, the left side was carpeted and had comfortable looking chairs and pine tables, the room goes back quite a way and opens out a bit at the rear, this is where familys with children were dining.
There were 10 pumps on the bar but most of these had foreign beers on leaving me with a choice of three beers,i had a drink of Titanic Captain Smith which was a nice drink, the other beers i noted were Butter Cross bitter brewed by Nottingham brewery,Abbot and Ruddles best.
The pub was very busy on my mid Saturday afternoon visit.
I thought this was a decent conversion from an old pub and it seemed a bit lighter and airy than most Spoons i have been in.

Pub first visited as the Crown Inn 15/10/1983

Latest visit 6/4/2013
