A revisit at the end of a long, boozy West Berks crawl found WB GOB, Abingdon Bridge and Tutts Clump cider. My Abingdon was in good form. Bar snack of wasabi nuts for a pound went down a treat. Walkers and dogs welcome, a positive attitude as that’s rarely the case in these types of pubs. Is establishing a good reputation for its dishes, a work of colleague of mine raves about the place. Proof that you can run a food-led country pub whilst still welcoming regular punters with good ales and cider. Must eat here soon…

A tidy pub that specialises in good food and higher-end beverages. My visit found a couple of West Berks ales in good nick, not too badly priced either. There's also a good wine list. Drinking area is at the front, dining to the rear. The unusual pub name comes from the shoulder blade bone of a mammoth found in the Kennet Valley. According to Wikipedia, “the bone is encased in copper and hangs from the front of the pub as the pub sign.” The pub interior is decorated to a fairly high standard and there’s a decent rear beer garden which we took full advantage of. The food has also been well-rated by acquaintances of mine. I’d be happy to pop back here again. Rated 7.
