I stayed in Lochmaddy several years ago and went into the public bar. On my more recent visit I thought I'd try the lounge instead. It was mid-afternoon and I was the only customer. There were two hand pumps, with Caledonian Deuchars IPA on one, and nothing on the other. The barman misheard me when I asked for a half, and I ended up with a pint, but we compromised and he charged me £2.50 (which he said was the price of a half, but that surely can't be true, can it?). It was in good enough condition, but it's not one of the world's great beers and I would struggle to get up enough interest to go for a second pint, never mind a third. The pub itself has little to recommend it either, with a few maps from a survey of local lochs and lochans the only items of interest on the walls, unless you count the football on TV (Croatia v Wales).

Dating from 1864, the hotel is one of the first buildings you'll come to if you're arriving by ferry from Uig on Skye. The cosy public bar is the locals' village pub and the lounge next door provides meals.
